I don't know how many people here have bothered to look at my site,
http://quikscript.teraiten.cjb.net/ , you'll find a nice program that
automatically changes characters to proper ones by interpreting letter
combinations (and not shift-combinations, letter combinations is much
faster) and returning the correct character to the screen.

You have to type in a regular romanisation scheme for English, but it works.
It could use a lot of fixing & bugtesting, and it is only compatible with
quickscript at the moment, but I encourage people to try to alter the source
code for their own keyboard maps.

Please take a look at my page and download the programs, and properly read
all the documentation available. I know I need to add more, but I don't have
the time now. You may help me out if you want, and I'll give proper credit.

Hi Ewout
You do have a very nice site with a lot of links to useful tools.
Unfortunately, the one called Paul Vandenbrink's Links
actually belongs to Hugh.
He has the Shawalphabet site ending dot org.
where as my site ends dot com.

There is a free click-and-drop keyboard driver/remapper with a user-friendly interface. You can create your own keyboard layouts or use any of the proposed : Portugese, German, US-Dvorak etc.

It is called KDWin. Look up for it in any search engine.

Best shavian regards,

Delighted that somebody is keeping SA extant. I learned it at 12 from
the free public library copy of "Androcles". I found that with
practice it was much quicker to write than Roman, but I never managed
to read it back as fast.

At that time I had a nerdy interest in orthography and artificial
languages, and as an ardent monarchist (still am) I thoroughly
approved of Shaw's stipulation that phonetic spelling should be based
on King George V's clear and relatively accentless spoken English.

But although I often used SA as a journalist to jot down
conversations verbatim, and for diary entries, it was always with a
view to confidentiality. In nearly 40 years around professional
wordsmiths, nobody who looked over my shoulder ever recognised what I
would explain away as "Yiddish shorthand".

Does anybody have any idea how many people can write SA, in Britain
or elsewhere in the English-speaking world?

Welcome!

Yes, the alphabet survives, albeit in a somewhat minimalist state! Most people who use it seem to be linguists who hold some interest in Phonetics.

I take it this is your first visit to the online Shavian 'world'? :) You might be interested to know that there are several Shavian fonts available for download (http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/fonts.htm). Also, there are many websites containing Shavian info and other tidbits - try www.shavian.org <http://www.shavian.org> for a start!

Hi Philip
Nice to hear from you.
Once you get the hang of the Shaw Alphabet, it's hard to imagine a
better way to record English. I learned it in similar circumstances a
few years after you. I found a cheap orange penguin paperback copy of
Androcles in a dusty old 2d hand bookstore.
Sadly, for new learners it is hard to find copies of it any more,
even in the Library.
As for the rest of your history, it matches mine, except the word
ardent Monarchist, is little too strong a term for my belief in a
Constitutional Monarchy. Canadian, to the core.
And while I approve of having a standard, George V and VI are long
gone, and thus no longer available for consultation.
My latest interest is to spell out a slightly cut down version of
Shaw Alphabet, so the American's can get in on the fun.
Regards, Paul Vandenbrink
P.S. On the Revised Shaw Alphabet site on www.shawalphabet.com the
Shavian Alphabet is advertised with the words, "Keep your diary
confidential", so you probably correct.
I suspect there are about 20,000 people worldwide who would recognise
the Shaw Alphabet from a sample, but less than 400 who would use it
or be able to puzzle out its meaning, without doing research. And it
is an aging population.
All of us in the Yahoo group, with exception of Hugh, seem to be on
the wrong side of 45. Where are all the bright young things?

I heartily agree. Thanks to some impressive font design it is now not
just possible, but easier to type Shaw than to write it. May I
recommend you install the Ghoti Font on your Windows or Mac PC. Then
you can read the Shaw (bulletin) Ikon boards, that Hugh so kindly set
up.

Hi Scott & Philip
I apologize for the exageration. There are a few young people to
keep the Shaw Alphabet alive. Thank Goodness.
I think Craig is under 40, as well.
Still in the long run it has to grow more popular or die out.
