Yes. How did you do it?

I discovered that I had Androcles installed (had forgotten about it)
and the browser's (Safari) fixed-width font set to Lucid Grande, with
default encoding Unicode (UTF-8). Would this have anything to do
with it?

curious,

My guess is that this was the main reason why it appeared in Shaw for
you; most other messages in Shaw don't use Androcles but use some
other font instead.

The "modern choice" is Phillip Driscoll's Shaw Sans No.2. The only format
available on my site is the TrueType version (.ttf).

Will TrueType fonts not load under Mac OS? I'm sure somebody made a Mac
version of Shaw Sans No.2 some time ago, but I can't remember who, and I
can't remember where it's available from.

Kirk's is the first message (he's the guy who wants the scroungiest copy of Androcles in stock - I guess he wants to tear it apart and scan it) I've ever received on this list that actually appeared in Shaw Alphabet. I'm running AOL's rather primitive Macintosh mail client - AOL no longer upgrades its application for Mac. How'd you do it, Kirk?

Curiouser and curiouser; Kirk's reply did not
appear in Shavian, but in keyboard romanji.

Checking back, his original message (1376)
still appears (for me) in the Androcles font
when using the Yahoo group interface. This
holds true even when I select Shaw Sans 2 or
any other fixed-width font and/or switch
encoding. It's always there no matter what.
Remarkable resilience.

However, Scott Harrison's and Joseph Spicer's
shavian signatures do not appear in shavian
no matter what font or encoding I select.

To make matters interesting, the situation is
exactly reversed for the e-mail digests. The
two signatures above appear as they were
intended(in shavian), but Kirk's message 1376
is in romanji.

???

what would life be without mystery
(or is it confusion)?

My Androcles font was only installed in the font library, one of many
forgotten fonts, it was not selected. Selecting Shaw Sans 2 as browser
font no longer works.

TrueType fonts are/were originally Mac fonts. Shaw Sans 2 works fine in any
word-processing application, and did for me even with YahooGroup correspondence
before they changed the interface; since then no.

It is a OS X machine, I have your keyboard layout, it will type in both sets
of characters, it will just not transmit even when encoded in UTF-8.

There is probably something simple that I am overlooking,

Most operations on a Mac are ridiculously simple once you know what to do;
knowing what to do however isn't always readily apparent. I suspect this is
so because the people at Apple are constantly changing (improving) things
which can at times bewilder those of us who only possess normal thought
processes (if that). Either that or it is a conspiracy to oblige us to purchase
one of those guidebooks such as David Pogue's "The Missing Manual".

Anyway, if you download a font it will appear on the desktop (unless you
have selected some other location as recipient). Simply double-click it and
a window should appear with a sample of the font displayed and a button
that reads "install font". Select the button and it will be installed .

A possible complication, as JS pointed out, is if you would wish to install this
font in your own user's account rather than in the regular font library. Think
general and particular. If you are the only person using your computer or
do not care to bother about separate accounts then you may ignore this.

I think it interesting that you and I seem to be the only ones (?) who received
Kirk's message as intended. I have no idea why this should be so.
