*nods* But not all systems can handle surrogates (for example, NT does not
know about them). In general, code points outside the BMP are poorly
supported.

The sooner we forget about surrogates the better! Use UTF-8, which is
much better and has become the defacto standard for the internet.
That's what my signature is encoded in below - in fact, this whole email
is in UTF-8. I believe WIN-XP handles SMP (plane 1) characters alright,
as long as you have a proper font installed. As for browsing and email,
try Mozilla software (Firefox, Thunderbird, Mozilla suite). It should
work much better than anything MS has to offer.
Sorry I can't easily type in Shavian right now. I need to update some
of my software.

There are quite a few augmented alphabets for Engish
Starting with those developed by Bishop Wilkins and Isaac Pitman.
New Alphabets for English number over 100.
http://www.langmaker.com/db/alp_index_submittedby.htm#JeffreyHenning
The problem with most of these alphabets is that they do not have one symbol
for
every sound in spoken English. They are not Unigraphic.
Many of these systems claim to be an improvement by not having a different
symbol for upper and lower case.
Pitman has 5 versions of his phonotypy
IPA, SAMPA, and Kershenbaum have symbols to represent 40+ sounds (phonemes).
ENgliS supplements the traditonal 23 letters with a reassigned C, Q X and
It also uses a few consonants for vowels (y, w, )

On the internet no one knows you're a dog.

Philip,
It seemed to work for me. As a very-much non-geek I do not
really understand code points or all the rest of the technical
discussion, sad to say. What I did was to select Shaw Roman 2
as the fixed-width font for my browser and presto, when I
previewed my test before sending it, it appeared in Shavian.
It also came back in Shavian when I viewed the recent messages
posted. Even your reply was in Shavian.
Does this mean that it only works for me on my computer but
not for anyone else? I don't know.
regards,
dshep
