It did not work for me in anything but a string of picturesque question marks. Usually the Shavian messages do appear on my screen as they should. Quentin Kyle

Using UTF-8 in this way is a nice idea in principle, but how easy would it be for me (and others) to write in Shavian using this form of encoding?

I think that would be really interesting if you are able to allow someone to write in Shavian as well as read it. Reading provides useful practice, but being able to take notes in Shavian would be even better. Perhaps I can help in the project if people can provide me with information on:

(1) programming the Palm
(2) allowing an alternate input mechanism for the Palm (like writing in Japanese for example)

On another subject:

I would like to determine whether the list can read UTF-8 messages. These are mail messages that are encoded in Unicode's UTF-8 encoding scheme. This would allow us to mix Shavian and Roman (or anything we want) in the same mail message. And it would mean that we do not need to provide font information when sending mail. All that needs to happen is for us to make sure each of the mailers we use can process UTF-8 messages. I will be sending a message that is UTF-8 with some text in Shavian and Roman for people to give feedback.

set up my Mac, system 9.1, IE browser and Entourage to read it? The IE
Browser I've set the prefs to UTF-8 but still can't read it there either.

Hugh,

It depends on your system. Since in another note you indicate that it is Windows 98, I guess a little difficult at the moment. The reason being, the only way I can determine to create a keyboard DLL for Windows is to buy some software that allows me to do so. And unfortunately the version of the software I need to buy seems to be one of the more expensive versions and I have no idea how much it costs right now. Assuming I do get the software and then create the proper keyboard, it should be really easy as long as the thing into which you are attempting to type can accept Unicode data, and you have a font that has the Shavian at the write Unicode points. At least we have that font (thanks to Phillip Driscoll).

If you have a Mac OS X system, it is a no-brainer. All you need to do is place the font in your font folder, and then Mail, TextEdit (a rich text editor) and OmniWeb (the best web browser on the planet bar none :-)) (and any other native application) can view Shavian. And if you want to write it, just take my input manager and put it in the input manager folder and any app that lets you write text can write Shavian.

Hugh,

If you download the windows font on my web page and make your
browser use that font for displaying Unicode pages, can you read the
UTF-8 web pages on my site? If so, then I would assume you should be
able to read UTF-8 mail in your browser if your browser is handling mail
for you. Otherwise I will have to add it to a list of applications that
do not understand Unicode.

Thankyou, for the input on how to use UTF-8 on my Mac. I bought OS X,
but was reluctant to use it yet. I guess it's time for me to make the
plunge and install it now.

Hello,

I have created a test keyboard DLL for Windows NT. I have no idea
whether the same techniques are used for other Windows versions. Please
try it out if you want. The instructions are on the bottom of my web
page. I have also done a little bit of research to find text editors
that allow you to type Shavian with this DLL. They yes/no list of
editors is on the page as well. It is by no means exhaustive.

The only mail program I have for Windows is the Netscape browser.
I was not able to type Unicode into it. I can tell it that it should
read Unicode, and that the font it should use when it gets Unicode is
the one that Phillip Driscoll created (and is on my web page). I was
also not able to paste Unicode data into a new message. Therefore, it
seems I cannot send Unicode from Netscape as mail. What is strange is I
am able to indicate that the HTML that is creates should be UTF-8 and it
puts the right headers in place. It just does not allow me to put the
right Shavian in the message.
