I'm American too ... and so is my accent ... obviously
I think that "hiccup" is a much better way of spelling
it ... probably an old Saxon pronunciation or
something ... but according to American Heritage
Dictionary, it can be spelt/spelled either way, but
pronounced the same:

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=hiccough

In fact, I haven't been able to find a single
dictionary that says it should be pronounced
"hick-coff". Can you find one? Couldn't the original
joke have been written by someone other than an
American? It was the only spelling that fit that I
could find. I know I've seen "hiccough" outside the
United States and it was pronounced "hick-cup" over
there.

Remember this?

Well now I guess I understand what Shaw meant with the initial 'gh'. True,
it's an isolated occurrence, but it shows that 'gh' can indeed be read as
'p'.

And as for the 'pt' being from 'receipt', it doesn't have to be - don't
forget Greek words such as 'pterodactyl', 'ptolemy', etc. This would leave
the 'ei' separate, free to be interpreted as being from words like 'vein',
'veil', etc.

Am I sounding academic yet?

Hi Star
I have never heard anyone even a toddler say hic-cof. And in Canada,
Hiccough is a perfectly acceptable spelling of <<hick-up>>. What
accent group would say hick cof?
