Hugh, Thanks for your contribution. Actually, a good way for us to
practice reading would be to read each other's transcriptions AND proofread
them. If we find things we think are errors, we could notify the transcriber
in the forum. Transcribing isn't easy, and my finger has slipped keys more
than once. Proofreading isn't personal criticism. Then the transcriber could
go into the vault and edit. And, I think you'll find your reading and
writing getting better as you spend a few minutes a day reading in Shavian.
I like that title, Shavia, BTW. I just hope it's not a plural form based
on the formation of the plural form "bacteria." Dan

Due to a 'misunderstanding', I will not be able to use the Internet for
a number of days, possibly weeks, so unfortunately I will not be
able to receive from or post to this group during this time.

Sorry about this - I hope I can get back as soon as possible and
enjoy the new contributions which are doubtlessly flowing into the
vault by now. And I hope you're all enjoying the Highway Code...

Goodbye for now... I hope it won't be for too long.

Greetings to all!

I have sent my transliteration to the Vault.

For those of you that like trivia questions and clues, the second line
of the poem is: "In a beautiful pea green boat,".

I've written a English to Shavian translator (and vice versa) and I need
someone who has more experience with Shavian to test it and to verify
spellings, etc.

It currently has the 300 Most Common Words in the English language plus
all
of the words in Androcles and the Lion in its own table/dictionary. If you
are interested in taking a look at it and commenting I would like to have
your input. I want to develop it further but need input. My long term plan
would be to release a package on the Internet free of charge to anyone who
is interested in using it.

It currently runs on a PC in Word 97 and requires a reasonably fast
machine
(the code in interpreted rather than compiled). Do you have Word and a
fast
PC and are you interested in working with me? At this point I need 1 or 2
alpha testers to help with the development, and to populate the
table/dictionary.

You can figure this out I think - Anything that is odd should be in
Androcles!

Apa khabar?

Sincere you live in Indonesia, I'm willing to bet that you people who have
learned English as a second language. Someone once said that "local
Englishes" such as Singlish should be encouraged and that these should be
written in Shavian according to their local pronunciation. I, on the other
hand, think that no one spends six years mastering English in order to be
able to converse only with the guy next door. The strength, attraction and
beauty of English is that it is international -- it opens up the door to be
able to communicate with people across the world. And so encouraging local
Englishes and local forms of Shavian defeats the purpose people have in
learning English. They would be better off focusing on their own native
language. For this reason, I think we should encourage the development of an
International standard Shavian. Do you agree?

Ciao,
Bill Brawner

YES, YES and again YES! Nice to hear some sense in this group.

[And anyone who thinks that Shavian can be adapted to any language should
get a grip on size of the problem by spending some time with "The Sounds of
the World's Languages" by Peter Ladefoged & Ian Maddieson (Blackwells,
Oxford UK and Cambridge Mass. 1996).
For those determined to pursue this line, there is a font that claims to be
able to represent any sound possible in any language - even alien ones. It
runs into some quite predictable problems in reading it, but for what its
worth it is called Lhoerr Normal. It is available on a site for Constructed
Languages - sorry I have lost the address.]

A toast to all lost causes!
