Hi Philip
I incorporated your corrections into the attached list of the
first 100 words. Sorry for the typo's on 57, 58.59 and 99.
Thanks for your help. Hopefully, I will post 201-300 soon.
Please take a look and provide additional pronunciations.
Regards, Paul V.
P.S. I agree with you. I would like to use 2 and tM for two and too,
respectively. But, is that the consensus? Is that the way it is done
in "Androcles"?
P.P.S. Does any one else pronounce from as "from", instead of "frum"?
P.P.P.S For me, either "pMD" or "pP" are both acceptable
pronunciations for poor. "pP" is the only pronunciation for me for
pour.

Hi,

I haven't been watching this topic till now -- but I'm surprised at it. I'll
agree it's useful to provide a standard pronunciation for people who wish to
use it; indeed I've always supported that. But I don't see the need to
create a new list from scratch when an entire dictionary exists with a
pronunciation key that is both directly compatible with Shavian and largely
"atlanticly neutral".

I needn't reiterate the name of said dictionary; needless to say most of my
recent posts have mentioned it.

This may be a nice exercise, but there's no need.

Hi Hugh
I admire the American Heritage Dictionary for Learners and think it is
a great resource to find out the standard pronunciation for any English
word which we might not have heard.
This list is designed to familarize a new learner with a bunch of the
most common Shavian spellings, to get them going in the right direction
quickly without a lot of hunting around in a Roman Alphabet Dictionary.
We want Shavian to be accessable to everyone without a lot of research.
So if the New User can quickly recognise some of the common English
words in Shavian, he can start reading more easily and save his
analytic skills for the more difficult words. We are also including the
common Shavian variant spellings for people with an RP British accent,
so the new reader will recognise them too, even if he is an American
English speaker.

Also I can think of perhaps 10 Shavian conventions, that are easier to
demonstrate with a selection of common words written in acceptable
Shavian. Everything from the four standard abbreviations, how to write
the eu/ew sound, to when and how you need to indicate a Proper Noun or
Name.

Regards, Paul V.

Paul,

I would say, Shavian is perfectly accessible to anyone - one search for
"shavian" on Google, and you're faced with plenty of websites with the
character descriptions and example texts.

If we're in the business of standardisation, and we accept that the AHD
provides optimal "general" spellings, we should base our common word lists
on it.

I know this as "kAnot". I suppose it depends on whether you stress the
first or the second syllable. (dictionary.com / AHD appears to allow
both variants.)
