I had a dream last night, and it took a while for the idea to insinuate itself into my writer's brain. You see, in my dream, I was reading this book to learn a language that my brain made up. At the beginning of each chapter/section/whatever, there would be vocabulary. Cat = *word my brain made up*. In this case, let's use chat, the french word. So every time the word cat appeared for the rest of the book, the word chat would be substituted. That way, as the very thick book continued (likely a collection of stories with increasing vocabulary) you would learn the language. For verbs, you could see them in context, for instance, the French word être meaning "to be" would be conjugated, but you would see active conjugations. Je suis, tu es, il on, ect. would be used, but the rest would be in English.

Okay, my wierd brain aside, could this work for a transilteration technique such as shavian? For instance if we see /bib/ then every time the phoneme appeared (e.g. boy, bat, baton, Egbert) the /b/ would be replaced by a /bib/. Let's say you introduce letters in pairs, /pip/ and /bib/, /tot/ and /did/, then it should only take 24 chapters to use the complete shavian alphabet. Granted there are a few squabbles left to resolve, such as standardized/rp spellings, but what do you guys think?

Close, but not quite what I pictured. Yours was too random. It would have to be regulated ONLY one or two letters at a time. Something like this (my mac may do shavian, but my brain does not do the keyboard):

In this case, we would replace /ing/, /l/, /r/, short /i/ as in "is, and long /e/ as in "see" with the appropriate Shavian letters, and only those in this case, as if we were a little ways into the book:

I used this one because it's in the public domain. But imagine if you took a book, a regular, even a public book, and instead of transliterating from whole cloth, and having such a steep learning curve, change one letter or group of letters at a time *until* the book is entirely in the new language. Then of course, have copies available that *aren't* trainer books.

I've seen it done!

Not for English, but for Esperanto - there was a story ("Trigamba
Jocxjo" IIRC, "Three-Legged Joe") which used this technique to
introduce a slightly-modified form of the Shaw Alphabet for Esperanto,
by using more and more letters in subsequent chapters.

Well, it will take some time to do, but when I do have some spare time, I'm going to write a full explanation complete with examples. Also, I'd like to add hand written notes, as in how to hand write the alphabet.
