I use Safari 5.0.5 on Mac OS 10.6.8.
I think your settings are screwed up. There is no reason you should not be able to send and receive UTF-8 mail properly. Firefox is certainly Unicode-capable. I shouldn't think it would have trouble with Plane 1 characters.
Anyway it's not Yahoogroups that's at fault, since I can send and receive Unicoded Shavian. I hope it's not too hard for you to check your configuration.

Indeed, Shavian is encoded in Unicode, but to be honest, I'm not sure how to
make use of it. How do I type Unicode Shavian characters?

I just ordered this book in hardcover. I was wondering if it has an interesting story.

Not really. It's the old children's fable of the lion with a thorn in
his paw. (Man finds lion in woods with thorn in his paw. He
takes it out. Lion is grateful. Years later, man is thrown to the
lion, but it turns out to be the same lion, who recognizes the
man and refuses to harm him.)

Oh well. It will be good practice and a neat book to have in my collection.

You have to have a software keyboard driver to do it. There are different ways of making these for different platforms. I will be happy to make one for the Mac OS and upload it. Is there as standard layout mapping?

My impression is that the de facto keyboard standard is the one
derived from Ross DeMeyere's Shavian fonts, which mapped the letters
to ASCII (so, for example, capital "F" for "𐑲"). I've seen both "G"
and "/" used for the namer dot, so it might be worth considering
mapping it to both those positions, but other than that, I think the
layout is pretty straightforward.
Do you know/can you easily find out that mapping or would you like a table?
Cheers,
Philip

Anyway, here's one:
𐑐 p 𐑑 t 𐑒 k 𐑓 f 𐑔 T 𐑕 s 𐑖 S 𐑗 c 𐑘 j 𐑙 N 𐑚 b 𐑛 d 𐑜 g 𐑝 v 𐑞 H 𐑟 z
𐑠 Z 𐑡 J 𐑢 w 𐑣 h 𐑤 l 𐑥 m 𐑦 i 𐑧 e 𐑨 A 𐑩 a 𐑪 o 𐑫 U 𐑬 Q 𐑭 y 𐑮 r 𐑯 n
𐑰 I 𐑱 E 𐑲 F 𐑳 u 𐑴 O 𐑵 M 𐑶 q 𐑷 Y 𐑸 R 𐑹 P 𐑺 X 𐑻 x 𐑼 D 𐑽 C 𐑾 W 𐑿 V
plus namer dot (mapped to middle dot · IIRC) on both G and /.
Most of the mappings are reasonably mnemonic, in my opinion.
Cheers,
Philip

Which operating system do you use? there are keyboard layouts available for Windows, Mac and all the other *nix platforms.
