The reason why the cover isn't in Shavian is because Lulu and the industry in general have very strict policies on how books are to be formatted for mass distribution. For starters, the title in the book's metadata, cover, copyright page and title page all have to be exactly the same. As for the metadata, Lulu only accepts titles in the Latin character set for now. Even if the entirety of the interior text in written in something like, say, Korean, which is far more popular than Shavian, they're forced to enter the Korean title in a romanised form or translated into a language that uses the Latin alphabet. As a result, if I DID make the cover of the book Shavian, that would make a "conflict" in the title, even if the Shavian text was 100% correct, and the book would be turned down for distribution. This actually happened to me with the condensed version of Poe, when all I tried to do was make the title page of the book Shavian only. It tried to explain to them that yes, the title was in fact the same, but they were having none of it. In the end, I had to make a new revision, pay an additional $75 for the review process (their cost for GlobalReach at the time, which this past year has thankfully been dropped). So, until this changes, the covers will need to use a strictly Latin alphabet. :-/ As soon as this changes, though, you better believe that I'll start making Shavian covers for any future books ASAP.

alphabet, which isn’t very similar to the Latin one.

I could not find a standard format appropriate for ebook readers,
so I simply measured my 6" Sony, and since then use my own
non-standard format 9x12 cm. Here are examples (in an esperantic
Shavian):

"Pro Ishtar", a boring novel by H.A. Luyken

Actually I find this format convenient for a laptop or desktop
reading as well.

I also tried the ebook format, which could be an ideal solution
for any geometry; it works well for preinstalled fonts, but
embedding the fonts seems to be incompatible among various
manufacturers. Besides, ebook does not support footnotes (FB2
readers, e.g. CoolReader, are smarter).

Another option is HTML, which now can be instructed to download
required fonts (the @font-face css specification). E.g.

Sorry, in the above paragraph please read "epub" instead of
"ebook".

In the past several people have expressed the desire

or intention to render selected sections of the Bible

into the Shavian alphabet. Perhaps it would therefore

be of some interest to examine an earlier exercise

using a form of transcription called Pronouncing

Orthography from 1873. This is a modified phonetic

alphabet, in that alternative forms of letters for

similar sounds are allowed (for familiarity's sake)

in order to facilitate reading--a method sometimes

used to preserve continuity. Unfortunately not all the

letters are easily distinguishable, in part because of

the limitations of 19th century printing technology .

Interesting story about the London underground in 1914, a century ago, with delightful, manoeuvrable map, that included the remarks below, about a certain play that also opened that year:

"Accent, class and social mobility were major preoccupations of 1914 London. The new poet laureate, Robert Bridges, had temporarily ceased to pen poetry and was instead concentrating on writing A Tract on the Present State of English Pronunciation. His pamphlet attacked what he called "the corrupted vowels….of London vulgarity". He feared the "clipped and slovenly London jargon" would overwhelm the "older tradition"―and founded The Society for Pure English.

But even that couldn't keep out Eliza Doolittle.





On 11 April 1914, at His Majesty's Theatre --- which Max would draw the following year in his subsequent Tube map Theatreland -- Mrs Patrick Campbell waited in the wings for the curtain to go up on George Bernard Shaw's new play, Pygmalion. She would play the common little flower girl who's taught by a pompous professor of phonetics to "talk proper", like a duchess. Rehearsals had been stormy, as Higgins — played by the flamboyant, practical joker Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree — didn't get along with the serious Shaw.

London audiences swarmed into the theatre out of prurient interest — the play had already been staged in Vienna and America and everyone knew it contained the profane and forbidden line: "Not bloody likely!" Would Mrs Campbell dare pronounce it or would the censors silence her? She did dare — and the delighted audience laughed for over a minute at the decadence of it all.

Shaw of course had regarded his work as a serious social satire on modern manners, and was so appalled that Londoners seemed only to thrill at his use of a swear word that he walked out."
