I believe the establishment accents in the very early days were first the Tidewater accent of eastern Virginia, which George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and many of the early presidents and statesmen spokeโ€”an accent that remained important until the defeat of the South in the Civil War. Even before that however the most prominent universities had been established in New England or elsewhere in the northeast and this region became the intellectual as well as the commercial hub of the nation. Incidentally, both the Tidewater and the New England accents were non-rhotic, perhaps reflecting or following current fashions that had begun in the Home Counties. Both these accents however were in time to be outpaced by that of the intervening region established by William Penn and the Quakers from the northeast of England who presumably brought their older, rhotic accents with them. As Philadelphia became the primary entrance port at that time for most immigrants from Europe, the accent of English spoken there was the one to learn in becoming American. This is the ultimate source of Midland English in the U.S.


Still, the northeast retained its prominence, for those who paid attention, but not everyone did. In time the New England accent became to be regarded, if prestigious, as somewhat quaint by the rest of the country, even though at least one of its derivatives had and has a firm foundation in the, for lack of a better term, old-money families. This was the speech of Franklin Roosevelt; more recently, anyone who remembers William F. Buckley Jr's television interviews will have heard it.



The broad ah-sound in America in words other than calm, father, and a few others is now mostly confined to eastern Massachusetts, the home of the Kennedys and of the current Secretary of State and former presidential candidate John Kerry, both of whom in their younger years said 'ahsk' and 'pahst' but abandoned this pronunciation when they sought national office. JFK famously said in his inaugural address "รฆsk not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country".

Incidentally, have you considered using Noto Sans Shavian and Noto Sans [Latin, etc.] instead of crossing your fingers and hoping your visitors have a decent Shavian font installed already? Everything looks fine on my Apple gizmos (Apple Symbols) and my Windows 10 machine (Segoe UI Historic) but IMO Noto looks pretty good and would also show up on the odd Windows 7 machine and Android phone.

I'm not too familiar with WordPress themes' knobs, but if you're having trouble getting it set up I'd be happy to help.

Incidentally, what's your transliteration workflow like? Mine's at https://github.com/adiabatic/adaptor-raptor <https://github.com/adiabatic/adaptor-raptor> and I kind of like it because you can run it repeatedly and get the same output without final manual editing, but I'm worried that I'm accidentally going to do things like commit "wind" to the main dictionary as "๐‘ข๐‘ฆ๐‘ฏ๐‘›" and accidentally use that in a phrase that should be output as "๐‘ข๐‘ฒ๐‘ฏ๐‘›-๐‘ฉ๐‘ ๐‘‘๐‘ถ".
