* I'm glad that the threatened rift in the Shavian internet community
* concerning "huNG" and "Ha-ha" seems to have healed for the
* time being, but now that Ross DeMeyere has brought the matter
* of the switched glyphs to our attention I imagine it will keep
* nagging at the perfectionist part of many of our minds for some
* time to come -- and rightly so.
[major snip]
I've got a possible solution, if the issue comes up again. why don't we just
move the huNG down so it sits in the deep position, and move Haha up so it
sits on the base line, qualifying it as tall. Then, the same characters are
used, but now sit in their "correct" positions.
And if the issue doesn't come up again, pretend I never spoke :-)

Some of the messages are coming in to me in Shavian, others in Roman. I have the following fonts installed:
Shaw > SY (and on my system it is called simply Shaw, NOT Shaw Rough)
Lionspaw > lFanzpY
Shaw Script > SY skript (My own attempt. I think I'm the only one using this so I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't work.

No. In fact, at my end the message is in plain text. Something must be

All right, I will. Hope this brings more light into the matter for you. (I hope the HTML formatting arrives all right -- I'm posting this with Netscape Messenger rather than Pegasus because that seems to send out "Enriched text" (not the same as RTF) instead of HTML.)

"Cherokee writing, pictured above, is the creation of Sequoyah, one of the great names in the history of the American Indian. Convinced that the key to the white man's power lay in his possession of a written language, he set about bringing this secret to his own people. In 1821, after twelve years of work, he produced a syllabary of eighty-six characters, representing every sound in the Cherokee language. The system was quickly mastered by thousands of Cherokees and within three years a newspaper began to be published, and a constitution for the Cherokee Nation was drawn up in the Cherokee language.

"Sequoyah borrowed many of his characters from English, but since he actually neither spoke nor read English, they represent completely different sounds in the two languages. The letter D, for example, is pronounced a, while h is pronounced ni, W is pronounced la, and Z is pronounced no. But the Sequoyah syllabary has remained in use to the present day, with no modifications considered necessary in 150 years. That an unlettered hunter and craftsman could complete a task now undertaken only by highly trained linguists must surely rank as one of the most impressive intellectual feats achieved by a single man."

Philip

Has anyone got any lengthy written material that could be transliterated
into Shavian? Right now I'm a bit short of it, and my site is hungry for
more...

If so, please send it my way and I'll give it a shot.

Thanks,

Hugh

P.S. I'm still waiting for all votes to come in on the Shavian Web Site
matter...

Dear Shavia,

It may not be of any consequence, but I have just spent the whole of last week the Shavian section of my web site; if you get the time, could you possibly take a look at it and say if everything is okay? By the way the URL is http://www.soundbox.freeserve.co.uk.

I think that that will be the last time I update my page in that sort of way again; from now on I'm going to start working toward the single Shavian web site that's been the topic of discussion recently. After all, it's more important than just my own. Any more thoughts on the idea BTW?

Talk to you soon,

Hugh

The Roman text should have said "...spent the whole of last week UPDATING the Shavian section..."

Sorry about that, I always make stupid mistakes!
