It would also make a difference if you had Lionspaw installed or
not. AOL may have displayed it in a default font if it's not there.

Dear Shavia,

It seems that most people from whom I've heard recently have mailreaders that can cope with HTML-mail; this is good news, as Shavian posts like this one could become more commonplace rather soon. It also seems that the font most people have is Lionspaw (being available for both Mac and PC), so I think a common typeface for communication is already emerging. If anyone else on the list has any problems reading these messages (like if the mailreader displays them as plain roman text), please speak up quickly before all messages start to be written like this.

I do have Lionspaw installed. The Shavian e-mail in my mail box comes up as Roman text. However, when I read it at eGroups it comes up as Shavian. So I am all set. I have high hopes that when I upgrade from AOL3.0 to AOL4.0 that it will also show up as Shavian in my e-mail.

Well, it's nearly readable -- "if eniwun els on H list hAz problamz rIdiN HIz mesaJiz" looks a little like very badly spelled English. Imagine if the font designer hadn't chosen such a near-phonetic keyboard arrangement! (The most trouble is probably some of the diphthongs and -r vowel combinations.)

Cheers,
Philip

*
* If we all have HTML-compatible mailers, we can post in HTML using
* a Shavian
* font which we will have to agree on -- for example, "Shaw" or
* "Lionspaw" or
* "Androcles" or whatever.
I find these fonts, even my own, have to be stepped up to maybe 16 points to
make them readable (although Lionspaw seems to be better in the smaller
sizes). Perhaps that could be a project, make a font that looks better in
the smaller sizes...

*
* I even find it strange when Americans spell according to their accent; for
* example, many not distinguishing between "awe" and "on" or
* between "ash" and
* "ah". However, it's probably not the right idea to teach them "proper"
* pronunciation so that they can write Shavian "properly".
An interesting point. I'm currently working on a program that translates
English text into Shavian. I'm using a dictionary from the Carnegie Mellon
University, which has pronunciations which are American. So all the
translated text comes out in an American accent.

BTW FWIW I'm using an HTML enabled mail reader.

*
*
* First off, I've checked my email headers- It does show "TEXT/PLAIN", so I
* don't understand what's wroing with eGroups' handling of my posts here...
*
* As for HTML-based email, I cannot read it online, as I'm on a text-only
* shell account here... _HOWEVER_, I can download & upload HTML-written
* texts, so I can read online Shavian offline at my convenience... :)
There shouldn't be too much trouble with reading plain text and then just
viewing it in a Shavian font. After all, that's how all the current shavian
fonts work.
*
* On pronunciation, as I've tried to say, don't write Shavian in your accent
* based on the pronunciation of the letters according the perscribed accent
* (Northern English, King George V(?)), but spell according to how _you_
* pronounce the letters' names- It should _minimise_ spelling differences.
Well, minor variations in spelling, as far as I can see, shouldn't cause any
major hassles. After all, we have variations with the latin alphabet as it
is. For example, I'm an Aussie of English descent, therefore I spell colour,
through, tyre and litre. However, I'm able to handle color, thru, tire and
liter without my head exploding.
*
[snip]
*
* Should Shavian be linked to Shaw? For historical sake, yes, but it should
* _never_ be limited in such scope. That's why I say "Shavian" rather than
* "Shaw Alphabet", by the way... :)
Maybe it should be called "Read's alphabet"

* Shaw- Hell, I've never _seen_ a copy of "Androcles...", except what few
* examples have been offered on the web... I have a fascination with
* languages & writing systems- _Especially_ writing systems- So this piqwued
When I finally get my web page up (soon, soon) I'll probably put a couple of
my own attempts at phonetics there, for curiosity value only, of course.
* my interest... :) I'm not all _that_ old- Shavian is actually older than I
* by about 3 years... :) (I was born in 1965, so that makes me 33...) I'm
* not even British... (I live in rural California, up in the Redwoods, which
* are named for another inventor of an alphabet- Sequoia... :)
Sequoia? Do tell...
* Anyhoo...
