It's the opening paragraph of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Gold-Bug".

At the moment, I'm running on a "starter" package at DigitalSpace, which
gives 10 MB. Practically none of that is used for Shavian at the moment, but
I'm also using shavian.org as a repository for some stuff I'm doing on a
constructed language called Verdurian, by Mark Rosenfelder.

Hm, it appears that I'm already using 9 out of those 10 MB. I'm not really
sure whether I want to upgrade to the next bigger package (50 MB), since
that would be a fair bit more expensive (and I'm only doing this as a hobby,
so spending $80 a year on it is something to think about first)... but it's
possible to buy extra space at a monthly cost per megabyte. Maybe I can also
clean up a bit. (On the other hand, another account I have with the same
service is taking up 20 MB and nobody has complained so far.)

Any idea how much space your forum takes up?

> Is it accessible via FTP?

Yes and no... I access it via FTP, but I think it's possible to create an
extra FTP account. I don't really want to give away the main account
details. If I can create another account, then I could pass on the details
for that. Otherwise I might look into anonymous FTP into an /incoming
directory or something like that.

:) Yes; that is sort of what I was thinking about when I registered
shavian.org.

Perhaps I'll put my Verdurian stuff elsewhere to free up some space.

> If you seriously wouldn't mind hosting the forums I would be
> very grateful indeed!

Again, it would help if you could give me an idea of how much space you
would require. But if it's not too much (say, a couple of megs), then I
don't see a problem.

OK. I had suggested that to others as well -- I can provide the site but I
haven't the talents or time to populate it with data. Which is why the
Shavian portion consists basically of a list of links on the front page.

I'd prefer to have a link to the Verdurian section on the front page
somewhere but that is not mandatory. Other than that, I have no great
attachment to the Shavian contents that are currently up, though I think the
list of links should stay somewhere -- whether on the front page or not is
up to the web designer(s) to decide between them.

Philip is correct and first! I ran across the roman version of the
story when I was searching for web clues needed for a virtual
letterbox. It exists in full on the web.

************

I have been gone for a few days. While gone, I finished reading
Androcles and the Lion. As has been said before, we have very little
literature in Shavian. I am considering rendering the whole "Gold
Bug" story to Shavian. It has the advantage of being in the public
domain and also a wonderfully fun short story. It is long enough to
be worthwhile putting on a shelf, and short enough to think through
each word instead of doing by machine.

Subject: [shavian] SHAVIAN FONTS LIST

Toggle Shavian
As requested, here is a list of all Shavian fonts currently available (that I know of). I have placed them all on my website for download - I don't expect their creators to be altering them any time soon, and indeed, most web sites that used to hold them seem to have been shut down. At present the list only includes PC-compatible typefaces - if there is interest I will go in search of Mac fonts too.

Androcles - http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/content/androcle.ttf
Europa - http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/content/europa.ttf
Ghoti - http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/content/ghoti.ttf
Lionspaw - http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/content/lionspaw.ttf
Shaw Britannia Bold - http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/content/cshawbb.ttf
Shaw Roman No.1 - http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/content/cshawr1.ttf
Shaw Sans No.1 - http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/content/cshaws1.ttf
Shaw Sans No.2 - http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/content/cshaws2.ttf
Shaw Sans No.2 (Unicode) - http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/content/cshaws2b.ttf
Shaw Sans No.3 - http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/content/cshaws3.ttf
Shaw Script - http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/content/
Shaw Curly [gorgeous little font!!] - http://www.mixsynth.btinternet.co.uk/shavian/content/cshawcr.ttf

Hope this will prove helpful to all.

OK, you should be able to FTP there (= shavian.org) with username hugh,
password ghoti. However, any files you put there will end up in
http://shavian.org/hugh/ . This makes it a bit difficult to update the main
site.

Would it be OK for you to create a subdirectory under your FTP root
directory to put the main web site in and then sending me email whenver you
want me to copy the pages over into the real website root? That might take a
day or five for me to get around to doing, but I'd feel better at the moment
not giving out the main site password (which would also allow shell access).
Then you could put any of your pages into / and pages for the root into,
say, /mainsite (or whatever).

That way, you can put pretty much any of your own content (within reason)
under your FTP root. CGI scripts should be executable in any directory if
they have a known suffix, for example .cgi .

I put two sample files in that directory: index.html and sample.cgi. So the
following links should work: http://shavian.org/hugh/ and
http://shavian.org/hugh/sample.cgi (which is a really simple script that
just prints "Hello, world!"). One thing to watch out for is that you have to
mark any CGI scripts as executable, for example with "quote site chmod 755
sample.cgi" if you're using the command-line DOS FTP client. (Other clients
probably also have a way to let you execute 'chmod' on the server end.)

> How much exactly is the webspace/domain name combination
> costing you per year?

The webspace (with digitalspace.net) costs me $3/month, billed yearly ($36
per year) and the domain name (with joker.com) costs me EUR 13.92/year. So a
total of round about 50-60 euros per year, depending on the exchange rate.

> > Perhaps I'll put my Verdurian stuff elsewhere to free up some space.

About four megs (mostly because of a large number of small image files in
one directory, where each file takes up a whole disk block even though it's
quite a bit smaller). But after finding and deleting a couple of old log
files in the root directory, the entire site now only comprises about 5.5 MB
-- so there should be enough room for growth.

By the way, Reply-To should be set for shavian2@... --
that alias will reach me both at home and at work. I'd appreciate it if
you'd send messages about the site to that address, then I can look into it
wherever I am at the moment, when I have some time. Some things are more
easily done from home [mostly because the company firewall doesn't let out
telnet or SSH connections, nor HTTP connections to ports other than 80] and
some I can do from either place.

Cheers,
Philip
