Hi Rubik

If you find the Shaw Alphabet a little unwieldly, how about using my Sub-set
of the Shaw Alphabet for American Speakers. See attached.
I have been discussing it with the people over on Hugh's Ikon boards at
www.shavian.org.
Regards, Paul V.
____________________attached ____________________________

I suggested that we simplify the introductory works written in the Shaw
Alphabet for people with a Standard American accent, in a manner consistent
with the accent of English spoken on the National News Programs on the
American TV Networks.

To that end, I suggested that we mark the following 3 Shaw Letters as either
redundant or not used at all in the phonetic transcription of American
accented English. They would be reserved for for the transcription of
British Accented English.
Ian
Yew
Urge

Also in American English, the English Ah is usually pronounced the same as
Ash,
but in some cases where the sound is closer to a lengthened soft "o" of On.
Then the Ah would be spelled with an Shaw On letter or an Shaw Awe based on
its length to correspond with General American and Northern English
pronunciation.
There are a few rare words where the Ah sound is still preserved. It is also
found in a few foreign loan words. They are explicitly listed as (Father,
Amen, psalms, alms, ah-ha
calm, palm, psalms, rather, drama and espionage)

These 3 redundant letters (Ian, Yew, Urge/Err), would be replaced with the
following letters which are not any different in American accented English.
Ian == Eat Ado
Yew == Yea Ooze
Urge == Array

This reduces the letters to be considered in transcribing American English
speech from 48 to 45.
The Ah Awe and Ear (ir) sounds are relatively rare, further simplifying the
Shaw Alphabet.
As well as reducing the amount of time needed to learn the 42 essential Shaw
Letters for American English, it also greatly reduces the number of
acceptable variations in spelling, thus making the Shaw Alphabet much easier
to write.

As for the Subset of letters to be used for the transliteration
let me suggest
1. using Array for all simple er, err or urge r-sounds.
2. using vowel+array for all vocalic r-sounds except
are, air, or, ear(ir) or the plain non-vocalic R.
Ear pronounced in 2 syllables (i.e gear, steer) would be
written Eat+Array
3. using Eat+ado for Ian
4. using Yea+Ooze for Yew
5. only use the Ah sound for the 11 words in
Hugh's list of English words where Ah is
the only recognized British pronunciation.
Father, Amen, psalms, alms, ah-ha
calm, palm, psalms, rather,
drama and espionage)
For all other words, Ash would be used instead of Ah.
This allows the selective use of 45 of the full 48 letters.

Hugh,

I agree that we can't change Shavian and that Androcles is the standard. Any modification of Shavian would have to use a different name.

The only problem with hung-ha ha shape reversal is that it messes up this chart.

<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/saundspel/files/Shaw-Alphabet/shavian-consonants.gif>

We could move the ha-ha shape up to the top line, but then it would not be a tall character. Read probably did not change it because he moved away from highly analytical schemes. Just remember that /h/ is not voiced as the chart indicates.

[Hugh] But that's not what it's about. We are not in the position to change an alphabet that is not OURS to change. This is simply about the fact that you can't sell an alphabet as Shavian if it ISN'T SHAVIAN!

What is the great problem with the way 'h' and 'ng' are? They don't cause any problems in usage or in anything else apart from simple perfectionism. It's a nitpicking, niggling point that no one should have to make a massive issue about.

Read didn't see it necessary to 'flip' the the letters back to their 'proper' positions when he drew up Quikscript; although 'h' has a different symbol, 'ng' is still the same tall letter. If this were a genuine error, why was it not corrected, as Read DID correct the 'air'/'err' reversal?

It's far too easy for us to 'tinker' with the alphabet. What's NOT going to be as easy is promoting the alphabet to a wider audience, but this is the priority here.

Right now we have a WORKING alphabet, and everyone seems to take for granted the fact that it wipes the floor with the Roman alphabet!! PLEASE let us not forget this!

[Steve] I tend to agree with Henry Sweet's observation. "The problem is not with the Roman alphabet but with our irrational use of it."

Hi Steve
I noticed that you reversed the Shaw letters for Air and Urge in
your illustration of the Shaw Letters.
Wouldn't it be a better idea to leave the Shavian Alphabet as it is and
start discussion a new Revision called Shaw2000.
We could vote on corrections and improvements.
Provided we get a quorum.

Paul,

Yes, I meant to fix that.

I changed air-urge and then meant to change it back.

I think that it is correct in a second table that I will post.

It would be better to call any revision by another name.

Thanks for catching the typo.

[Steve] I tend to agree with Henry Sweet's observation: "The problem is not with the Roman alphabet but with our irrational use of it." Ref: sweet absurd.html <http://www.unifon.org/sweet-absurd.html>

Shavian was supposed to be more compact than the Roman alphabet. Pitman observed that It took up about 2/3's the space required by the book face in the book, Androcles & the Lion. It is more compact that the Roman alphabet with the conventional orthography because of all the surplus redundant letters found in traditional orthography. Shavian has not been shown to be more compact than a phonemic orthography written in a condensed Roman font. Ref: Shaw Alphabet

"The problem is not with the Roman alphabet but with our irrational use of it." - Henry Sweet, Oxford University 1890

The advantage of Shavian is that it permits you to use similar shapes for similar sounds. This is missing from the Roman alphabet where, for instance, voiced unvoiced pairs do not resemble each other. What this means is that F f could replace v-f and Ss cold replace z-s. The current ASCII font code does not take advantage of this. PMF <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/saundspel/files/PMF/43pmf-cap.gif> retains the analytical character of Shavian and the basic Roman letter forms.

Star Raven wrote: I cannot truly recommend changing too much of the alphabet as there are many merits to shavian in its original form. Revisions might be able to retain all of the merits of the original shaw alphabet. The point is that even if shavian was seriously flawed - which it isn't - we don't have the right to revise the classic notation. We can, however, use it as a starting point for a new notation. We can call the new notation Shaw influenced but it should probably have a name more distinctive than Shavian 2000.

A very readable phonemic Roman code using only keyboard characters can be constructed. The two options for expanding the alphabet are digraphs and reassigned uppercase letters.

3rj-er <urge-air> has not been corrected in this chart. This and the revised chart above is Classic Shaw.

These are the kinds of narrow space saving characters that Shaw had in mind when he wrote his 1941 preface <http://www.unifon.org/shaw-pref.html> . The characters are narrow but probably no narrower than the characters found on a condensed roman font.

The real savings is in the elimination of superfluous characters [silent letters]. This alone will reduce the space requirement by 10%. Eliminating the digraphs can save another 5%.

It does not save any space in Unifon because digraphs are replaced with capital letters which are as wide as some two lower case characters.

<p>The advantage of Shavian is that <b><font

missing from the Roman alphabet where, for

do not resemble each other.  What this

<p>Star Raven wrote:  <i><font

changing too much of the alphabet as there are
many merits to shavian in

might be able to retain all
of the merits of the original shaw
alphabet.  The point is that even
if shavian was seriously flawed - which it isn't
- we don't have the right
to revise the classic notation.  We can,
however, use it as a
starting point for a new notation.  We can
call the new notation Shaw
influenced but it should probably have a name
more distinctive than
Shavian 2000.  </p>
<p>A very readable phonemic Roman code using
only keyboard characters can
be constructed.  The two options for
expanding the alphabet are
digraphs and reassigned uppercase letters.</p>

<p>The advantage of Shavian is that <b><font
color="#800000">it permits
you to use similar shapes for similar
sounds</font></b>.  This is
missing from the Roman alphabet where, for
instance, voiced unvoiced pairs
do not resemble each other.  What this
means is that F<font size="1">
</font>f could replace v-f and Ss cold replace
z-s. The current <font size="1">ASCII</font>
font code does not take advantage of this.
<a
href="http://groups.yahoo.com/group/saundspel/files/PMF/43pmf-cap.gif">PMF</a>
retains the analytical character of Shavian and
the basic Roman letter
forms.  </p>
<p>Star Raven wrote:  <i><font
face="Arial">I cannot truly recommend
changing too much of the alphabet as there are
many merits to shavian in
its original form</font></i>.  Revisions
might be able to retain all
of the merits of the original shaw
alphabet.  The point is that even
if shavian was seriously flawed - which it isn't
- we don't have the right
to revise the classic notation.  We can,
however, use it as a
starting point for a new notation.  We can
call the new notation Shaw
influenced but it should probably have a name
more distinctive than
Shavian 2000.  </p>
<p>A very readable phonemic Roman code using
only keyboard characters can
be constructed.  The two options for
expanding the alphabet are
digraphs and reassigned uppercase letters.</p>

Toggle Shavian
Hi Steve
If I was unable to assimilate the Shaw Alphabet, and I just had to go
Roman because my mental conditioning is so familar with it, I would
just use the SHaw Keyboard mapping, and skip a few extraneous letters
to keep things as simple as possible.
The Shaw Alphabet Keyboard mapping using the Uppercase letters is very
logically consistent with current English pronunciation.

Regards, Paul Vandenbrink

P.S. Any suggestions for the name of a new Revised Shavian Alphabet.
I thought Shaw2000, maybe?
