Hi Star
Forget I said anything.
I do not want to confuse people with phonetics.
I am a harmless, if somewhat pedantic grammarian
who only wishes to tactfully present a simple yet workable
American version/subset of the Shaw Alphabet.
Please take it as offered.
Hugh's suggestions are certainly worth a look.

Hi Star
I accept your neo-tradionalist apology.
Perhaps, we can get down to Brass Tacks and make up an
American Shavian Dictionary.
Then we can avoid arguing about silly abstractions,
and see how the subset of Shaw will work on real words.
Perhaps,
We can argue more productively over real word spelling?
Then you will have your ammunition to bring back into the
subset, any Shaw letters that you feel have been unfairly
maligned.
So do you want play?
Regards, Paul V.
P.S. The ball is in your court.

alright, where do we begin? I've a dictionary (Websters) on my desk,
but here's the problem presented by this. I need to have a shaw
alphabet that I can work easily with. I do have a new keyboard layout,
which I believe I meant to post but never did. I will post it as soon
as I find my previous notes. IMHO I feel that, since we have to use the
shift key after all, we might as well look at it as the designers did.
We should look at it as a typed alphabet.
Starting with "a,"

Hi Star
Why not use an On-line Dictionary.
The one at www.yourdictionary.com looks exceedingly complete.
And I like its list of sounds. Concise, complete and compatable with
the Shaw Alphabet.
See EXAMPLES below. Some vowel letters didn't come across well.
The Schwa is represented by an upside down e.
EXAMPLES AHD EXAMPLES AHD
pat a boot oo
pay ei out ou
care âr pop p
father ä roar r
bib b sauce s
church ch ship, dish sh
deed, milled d tight, stopped t
pet e thin th
bee ee this th
fee, phase, rough f cut u
gag g urge, term, firm, word, heard ûr
hat h valve v
which hw with w
pit i yes y
pie, by ai zebra, xylem z
pier îr vision, pleasure, garage zh
judge j about, item, edible, gallop, circus (Schwa)
kick, cat, pique k butter (Schwa)+r
lid, needle 1. l (nd'l)
mum m
no, sudden 1. n (sd'n)
thing ng
pot o
toe o French feu, German schön oe
caught, paw, car ô French tu, German über ü
noise oi German ich, Scottish loch kh
took oo French bon (bôN)
1. In English the consonants "l" and "n" often constitute complete
syllables by themselves.
Check it out. If it is OK with you, I will preceed to set up an "a"
dictionary using these pronunciations on one of Hugh's Ikon boards.
We can add and merge new words.
Regards, Paul V.
P.S. Thanks for continuing the discussion under such dire (rhymes
with fire) circumstances.

I find it hard enough to read Shakespeare in the modern day
equivalent of his spellings. I seriously doubt that there's all that
many people alive today who could read the true Shakespearean
spellings. L8r.

I find it surprising that those who strive for a new answer to TO, that
you seem so opposed to the Original Orthography. It is only slightly
harder for one who grew up with TO to read the original spellings, but
not by that much. Most people for whatever reason seem to be scared of
Shakespearian Orthography. Heck, they seem to be afraid of Shakespeare
in general.
I would say that 90% of people today could read it and understand both
the words and the spellings if they really tried.

I agree with Star here. Vocabulary is a bigger obstacle to understanding
Shakespeare than the original spelling. I don't think the spelling of
Shakespeare has been updated to make it easier for average folk. Rather, I
think it's part of the Traditional Orthography Conspiracy. Educators would
have a hard time defending the legitimacy of spelling "correctly" if
students saw that the greatest writer in history didn't spell correctly.
Below is a bit of original Shakespeare. Are there any words you can't
instantly decipher?
Sonnet 138
When my love sweares that she is made of truth,
I do beleeve her, though I know she lyes,
That she might thinke me some untuterd youth,
Unlearned in the worlds false subtilties.
Thus vainley thinking that she thinkes me young,
Although she knowes my dayes are past the best,
Simply I credit her false speaking tongue,
On both sides thus is simple truth supprest:
But wherefore sayes she not she is unjust?
And wherefore say not I that I am old?
O loves best habit is in seeming trust,
And age in love, loves not t'have yeares told.
Therefore I lye with her, and she with me,
And in our faults by lyes we flattered be.

Hi,
Sorry to be so late in responding but I have been out of the loop
for a while and am now just starting to catch up on email.
I use a Mac -- exclusively in Mac OS X.
Those interested in the development tools for this environment can
get them for free by registering on the ADC site. With them compiling
command line applications from Linux, etc. should be quite easy. For
those suffering with X Windows programming one can get the free versions
of X11 for the Mac OS X and have X Windows apps work.
Any work I do for Shavian applications is in Cocoa. And if anyone
needs advice for Cocoa programming let me know since I have been doing
it since 1989.
