Subject: [shavian] about Ian and 'ing'

Toggle Shavian
Hi folks,

I use all of the compound shavian letters in my shavian writing. As I was checking my email I noticed some debate concerning the "Ian" letter [W] I use this letter even though I pronounce it like Paul does. As 'eat' and 'ado' instead of 'if' and 'ado'. This is a case point for another example of using 'if' in 'eat' 's place. That being the 'ing' I pronounce it like 'eat' and 'hung'. And in my accent group it's either [IN] or [in], but not [iN]. However I use the [iN] because everyone else uses it like that.

regards,

Carl

Hi Carl
That's a good point. A phonetic Alphabet such as Shavian, will tend
to reinforce the most common pronunciation, without necessarily
preventing (Thanks, to a brilliant design) people from understanding
each other, even when the words are written as pronounced by people
with a different accent. The Medium is not the message.
The message is the message.

For so long our dicussions have centred around the same old discussions
and same old arguments. Now that we finally have a plan for moving
forward, I'm sure that we can move onward and upward. In our lives, we
may see the rise of shavian if not the fall of the old standards.

After the holidays, barring another writing binge on my part, I will
begin work on gathering our commentaries and discussions on the
previously mentioned articles. If anyone would like to write something
specific, I would be eternally grateful. I am willing to compile these
into a book and begin transliteration of words. I will track down my
copy of Why Johnny Can't Read, and look over the wordlists there.

Finally a method to our madness,

'A phonetic Alphabet such as Shavian,...'

Shavian is _not_ a phonetic alphabet.

Shavian _is_ a phonemic alphabet.

Thanks

If you can't find anybody willing or ready to write on a particular
area of shavian then ask me and I will be all too willing. I love to
give my tuppence worth.

Also, please, if possible, make sure Hugh reads what you've written
about shavian. I can honestly say he has more good ideas about the
script than anybody else.

Thanks
Joseph

An aside: Do anybody have a Crimbo wishlist? for shavian I mean.
(Maybe some faeries can majick something up).

Absolutely. A phonetic alphabet is only good for one accent group, and is
overly difficult for that matter. It would have to have many more letters than
a phonemic alphabet, and people would have trouble thinking of all the rules of
English phonetics, which they would have to know in order to write. Phonetic
alphabets (such as the IPA) are mostly useful to linguists and for dictionary
pronunciation guides.
