Be very careful about Dr. Seuss. The "Doctor Seuss Police" are out there looking for any unauthorized use of their material - or so says my wife, a storyteller, and she can quote you the rules for storyteller use of Dr. Seuss. - They're almost as bad as the "Disney Police" I think.

They certainly do authorize foreign language translations, with graphics. Somewhere around here I have a copy of "Green Eggs and Ham" in Hebrew - retitled in Hebrew "I Don't Like That, I Won't Eat It", for some reason - with the illustrations printed in reverse.

Here's my take on this. We have 48 (49 if you include the shavian
version of the quickscript whitewheat) letters in shavian. If we added
a new letter for each unstressed or syllabic consonent, how many more
letters would we have to add before it became ridiculous. The only new
letter that seems neccessary, due to the nature of the sound, is the
/hw/ sound.

I agree with what most have said, and that the indefinite article
should be classified as ado, not as age. However, I feel I must
disagree in the syllabic consonants, or those like /-le/ and /-ed/. It
seems to me that there is hardly a vowel sound there at all, yet I will
concede the point for ease that an ado should be used in these cases,
as well as an if in the /-ing/ cases. I will put these to use as I
transcribe mother goose.

BTW, Scott, was it you who offered to do the mapping change from the
Traditional Romanji? If so, in some previous e-mail, I have written
down a Dvorak-like keyboard, I will look through the archive and my
saved mail to try and find it.

Thanks, and thanks for the great discussion, all!

But has anyone seen the movies out? His copywrites might have already
expired, making his works public domain! If not, perhaps a Shavian
version should be presented to the cw holders. It was originally
written to replace the Dick and Jane middle income, middle America,
middle IQ drivel children were forced to read under the "word" method
of reading instruction. I'm looking into several books on how they
teach the reading of English, hoping to find some inspiration.

So, was it little cat aleph, and little cat beth?

They definitely have not expired. Copyrights expire now 75 years after the
death of the author, so that writers who died in the 1920's might now be going
into the public domain. However, Disney and his allies are constantly getting
the copyright laws extended, so that probably in the future nothing will ever
pass out of copyright.

I offered to make a Mac OS X key layout method that used different
keys than the ones traditionally used in Ross DeMeyere's fonts. If we
are calling this Romanji then yes, it was me. Since I call this
Romanji keylayout Shavian, what do you think I should call the one that
is in your pseudo-Dvorak layout -- were you thinking Shavian Dvorak?

IANAL (I am not a lawyer), but I do not think it is after the death of
the author, but rather after the original was copyrighted. There is
the normal extension that is made which makes it something like 70
years. However, Disney was successful in lobbying Congress (in the
U.S.) to extend this because the copyright on the original Mickey Mouse
images (from Steamboat Mickey) were about to expire and they did not
want those images to enter into the public domain. I imagine the Dr.
Seuss books were much more recent than the late 20's and therefore even
without the Disney extensions the copyright would not go away for quite
some time. Therefore, one would need to contact the current copyright
holders to be able to release anything to the public.

Scott Harrison notes that what may be relevant about Dr. Seuss copyrights is the copyright dates of the individual books. I'm not sure he's right, but here's the relevant information.

The earliest Dr. Seuss books - late 1930's I think - are in prose. Some time in the 1940's he began to publish in verse, in the tightly rimed and metered couplets we associate with him - he was a master of English verse.

I occasionally run a workshop on reading poetry where I have people read individual poems - mostly deep stuff from the 19th and 20th centuries - but this last time I had everybody read "The Fox in Socks". Translating that into Shavian would be a real tour de force.

*sigh* and thanks to the DMCA a lot of stuff that is reaching the end
of traditional copyrights is already protected. Well, kids, we're going
to have to get this beast cracking if we are ever going to beat these
people. We only want to improve reading. And why, my friends is English
so hard to teach? Because 1) everything is irregular, and 2) spelling
is worse.
