For the vowels of "father" and "bother", I have no remedy except to
check in
a British Received Pronunciation dictionary every time I have to write
a new
word containing one of them. This is a marked dialect difference, and
Traditional Orthography doesn't always guide me (is it "daence" or
"daunce"?
"baeth" or "bawth"?) Here it is probably unreasonable to expect the
North
American new writer of Shavian to conform to the Androcles orthography.

Believe it or not, the distinction of "ah" and "on" can be determined
according to Traditional Orthography. I know its hard to believe
getting logic out of our current spelling system is possible, but
looking through the pronunciation guide of my "American Heritage 3"
dictionary reveals some rules to this:

Use "on" when
-a short "o" is used in TO
-an "a" appears after a "qu" or "w"

Use "ah" when
-there is an "a" anywhere but after a "qu" or "w"
-it finishes a word

I hope these rules help anyone like me and Bob here who can't tell the
difference between the two.

use?
It came out in Courier for me.

It was Verdana for me -- my default browser font (at work, I use MS Outlook
and that gives me the HTML version). Still bad.

Cut+Paste into Word, followed by a font change allowed me to print it out
legibly.

Dear friends,
That's the only way that I can read your Shavian e-mail as well. I have
the same problem with Cyrillic, so it appears e-mail will not transmit in
non-Latin scripts. Am I right? I've been told that I need a scanner for
these scripts, that I should print the files out, scan them in as an image,
transfer them to e-mail, and then they will transmit by e-mail. Oy vey!! Any
other idea is most welcome. I will not be able to afford a scanner until
Christmas. And I'm sure that everyone of you knows how to do computer things
better than I do. Thanks for comments! Dan
