I agree, Ethan, but it seems that we have no other choice. Unless Yahoo
is willing to listen, and unless we could get every last member of our
group to say "we have no moderator, fix it!" then I don't know what we
can do other than start a new group with a moderator that won't vanish.

we could always try it, but there is still the tale of the certifiably
dead moderator. I still think that each and every one of us should send
a letter to them... even if it's a form letter signed individually and
from our own homes...

Yes, it may be (nearly) impossible to get the group re-moderated, but
Yahoo is still supposedly committed to fighting spammers on their
systems. There may be no moderator for the group, but if you report
spamming activity to Yahoo, they can still block and/or remove that
spammer. If they refuse to allow anybody to moderate the group, then
they must be willing to moderate it themselves, at least as far as
spamming goes.

I just realised that I didn't carry over the custom email addresses I set up
for one or two people (I think Hugh was one of them, can't remember the
others).

If you had an address with something@..., or you'd like one now,
email me privately (to Philip dot Newton at gmx dot net, not to the whole
list) and let me know what address you'd like and where you'd like that
address to forward to.

(Note that these are forwarding aliases only, no mailboxes.)

Cheers,
Philip

I am certainly willing to sign a petition asking Yahoo to change the
Moderator of our Yahoo Group.

Because the Legal situation has changed, they might listen now.
Spamming is now against the law in the United States. Because of
this, Yahoo may be more co-operative. Obviously it is in their best
interest that in orderto prevent their sites from becoming a magnet
for spam, they provide a prompt response to a request for a
Moderator change.
My only fear is that they might just shut down the group.
It is essentially a free service and they can't be bothered to
arbitrate all the various difficulties their users have.

Regards, Paul V.

Unfortunately I've already asked the Yahoo Groups Moderators' Forum if this
would work and they told me that under no circumstances would they EVER
change moderator of a group without the original moderator asking for it.
Apparently, the group is the exclusive property of the moderator no matter
what the members want. They would always say to start a new group instead.

As long as we can have a copy of all the past messages to make sure we don't
lose the archive then we can go ahead and start anew. I myself have copies
of ALMOST every last message since the group's inception; when I joined in
March '99 there had been about 10 posts made, and also due to a system error
later that year I lost all posts from May to July '99. But apart from those
two exeptions I have all posts to the Shavian group here on my hard disk.

Looks like we may be saved! now, what do we call the new group? :)
Might also be a good way to determine who is online and who is
sleeping.
