It's not been a problem really... not like some i've seen. I think we
should wait until it becomes a problem before we talk about moving.

I concur! It's not a problem yet, so let's keep what we have as long as
we have no major problems. Yet if we did have trouble, I would like to
see the list moved to a non-Yahoo server, preferably a private server
such as at shavian.org as Scott mentioned. This way we have more say in
what goes on. Yahoo can be troublesome at times! Yet as it is now we
have no major problems, so it's still acceptible (with me at least) for
the present time.

OK. OK. Let's wait and see.

Hopefully, the problem will not become significant, but it does need
to be monitored. Also can we blacklist the Group ids that are
introducing the Spam?

Well, that's another spam message just arrived (tabitha_iihk@...).
Let's hope this doesn't mark the beginning of a spam barrage.

Paul - the problem is that we cannot ban any spammers - only the
administrator can do that. The administrator hasn't been heard from in four
years.

The benefit of having the server under our control is we can easily
block people if necessary. Basically we can ensure posts only come
from members of the group. And we can monitor the membership list and
remove those that spam us.

We may not be able to ban the spammers from the group, but we can report
them to Yahoo for spamming activity. Perhaps Yahoo will take some
action of their own. Remember, the email has to be valid for it to work
with Yahoo groups. You can't post from a false address, because the
address is what confirms that you are a subscriber to the group.

I can't believe the nerve of that last spammer, in adding this to their
message:

"This email was sent because you joined our group.
If you do not wish to recieve any emails, unsubscribe by sending an
email to shavian-unsubscribe@...."

Thus, they make it look (to the uninitiated) as if the spam is from the
group moderator, and invite all who don't approve to unsubscribe from
the Shavian group! This has the potential of being destructive to the
group. How many new subscribers might unsubscribe because they think
the group condones such trash?

Has anyone considered sending a paper letter to yahoo explaining the
situation? Even with an internet company, paper might carry more weight.
They need a way to deal with MIA moderators, it's got to be a problem that
will happen repeatedly.

Hello all. I am a long-time lurker, first (or second) time poster.

I don't follow the Shavian group very closely, mostly because I was first attracted to the
Read Alphabet (Quickscript) group, and my time for that also has dropped off due to work.
(I am in Japan now, and working salaryman hours).

But I do sometimes read the messages, and am interested in staying on as part of the
group. I just wanted to suggest a few things if (perhaps when?) the group moves:

1) it might be nice to invite the Read Alphabet group along as well, as the focus is very
similar

2) you could consider moving to a bulletin-board style system, using a free product such
as phpbb (http://www.phpbb.com/) , on a private server

3) I simply love the http://www.omniglot.com/ web site, and I wonder if that author might
be interested in having a bulletin board attached to his site. it would be a fertile ground
for attracting new members who are truly interested in alternative writing systems. who
knows, we could approach him with the idea... maybe other language-oriented groups
would follow.
