Well I've scanned and uploaded the entire Shaw-Script library that was
available (issues 3,4,6,7&8). (Shaw-Script is a quarterly from 1964
written in Shavian, and edited by Kingley Read) Hope it helps.

Nick that's *fantastic* news, thankyou very much for doing that. I had great
fun reading through the editions you already put online. Which library did
you go to to find them?

I still want to see what the Shavian typewriter looked like though...

I have devised a keyboard layout for Shavian that I believe is more
efficient than the current QWERTY-based layout. Mine is based on
Dvorak, but many punctuation keys have been replaced by Shavian
letters and the entire left side of the keyboard is composed of
vowels. The arrangement of these vowels was based on some phoneme
frequency charts I found, putting the most frequent phonemes in
reach. Having had much experience with Dvorak, I found this layout
easy to pick up, although I would like feedback from others
regarding this layout.

It is available in two formats: one for viewing the majority of
current Shavian fonts that just replace ASCII letters with Shavian
letters and one that is compatible with Unicode fonts that have
Shavian letters at the proper code points.

I forgot to add, they are in the "datafiles" folder in the Files
section, in a file called shavorak.zip

Urrr... d'oh...

I've just devised one based upon Dvorak, putting all the vowels along the
left side (?!?) Took weeks to do as well! Used a 120,000 character frequency
analysis.

I hadn't announced its creation yet. I was hoping to find a picture of the
Shavian typewriter keyboard first to see how my layout compared with it!

Anyway I'll check out yours and see how it is seeing as you posted first...

There are several possible layouts. I myself have one called the
Shavian-Lowe layout which has been posted before (I may have to do a
file on this subject) but there are several layouts, all of which IMO
are better than the current Romanjii set up.

Hugh, I think the consensus of having multiple layouts is this: we need
something better than Romanjii.

Yours is probably much better designed and thought out than mine,
which was created in an evening. My phoneme frequency charts are
from some study of spoken Received Pronunciation, but a character
frequency analysis of actual Shavian text is likely to be more
accurate. For the consonants, in most cases I simply replaced the
Roman letter with the most intuitive Shavian one, and made sure the
shift combinations were reserved for the least frequently used
consonants. Then I had to shuffle around the miscellaneous
punctuation marks and ended up assigning many of them arbitrarily to
the shift versions of some of the letters.

That would be very interesting to see, indeed. I don't know where
you'd even begin to look for a picture like that though.

And I will check out yours when it becomes available. Hopefully we
can come to some sort of a consensus on what is an optimal layout
for Shavian and start promoting that over the rather inefficient
QWERTY-based one.
