Hi Star
Don't worry.
Given our many previous discussions some of which I still painfully
recall, it would not even be in my mind that you would ignore me.
Ignorance of any kind is not one of your many natures.

With fond regards and some waryness, Paul V.

Pot, Kettle, Black. While no flame wars come to mind, I do know we have

I would think that we want people to find us, but we need to have some
control of our special friends who wish to sell us drugs online or

I think it is pretty consistent. As you pointed out above, Hung and
Haha are special cases, in that they don't quite follow the rules of all
other similar sounds. Maybe that is why they are reversed from the
other letters - Hung tall, Haha deep - so as to draw attention to their
special status, perhaps? Whatever the reason, I think it works quite well.

Something of historical interest:

http://www.bath.ac.uk/library/collections/archives/special.html

Take a look down the above page. It seems all the material concerning the "new British alphabet" competition is held by the University of Bath. This was just brought to my attention by Hal Fulton (via his web page at http://www.hypermetrics.com/shaw.html). Apparently, they hold all the other entries (of which there were around 400), which would make fascinating reading for anyone in this group.

It would be good to have some further information on competition entries on-line, not stuck in a University vault where nobody can see it. I'm thinking I'm going to contact the university to see if I can arrange a visit at some point in the not-too-distant future - then the information I get (including, hopefully, scans of documents) will be put on-line for all to see.

You know, Ethan, I hadn't considered that. One more thing to add to the
FAQ, I suppose, as I think it's a good point. Haha and hung do tend to
give us trouble, amongst other things.

Hey, isn't it time for the up vs. ado discussion?

That would be great! I've often wished that I could view the other
entries. I wish you success.

I know that the University of Reading has all of Kingsley Read's
papers relating to his various writing systems. They issued a
catalog of these holdings in 1983 (with a nice portrait of Mr.
Read in the front).

Hi Hugh
I don't know if I am all that interested in the 400 original entries.
But I would be fascinated to look at the work of the 3 other Finalist, besides Kingsley Read. It should be included with the 400.
Into the valley rode(wrote) the 400.
