G'day Philip.

What sort of volume (file space) can you handle?

Hi,
I forgot to mention in my last letter that I do not mind
having a penpal in Shaw's Alphabet as well as KwikSkript.
The alphabets are not that much different so for those
who worry about it -- I think it is not that confusing.
There are only about 8 letters that have been changed.

I was developing one a while back. I'll have to fish (sorry, ghoti...) it
out again and see how far I got with it. But don't hold your breath, I'm
working one something more important at the moment...

Folks -

The new version of TPT, now called Rosetta, is nearing the completion of
its development stage. I have set the release date of the Beta version to
be August 25, my birthday.

Bear in mind that it will be a Beta version, and therefore buggy. I am
attempting to iron out as many of the bugs as possible before the release
date, but more are sure to raise their ugly heads.

One main problem I have at the moment is that the installation file will be
about 6Mb, which I find unacceptable. I would like to get it down below 1Mb
but I don't think that will be possible. Anyway the upshot of this is that
if I can't get it down to about 4Mb, I will not be able to host it on my
site, and it will probably choke the eGroup's Vault.

I'll keep you posted on developments as the day draws nearer.

Have you considered web storage à la X:drive? I think that gives you 20 MB
or so of storage, and you can have public space that anyone can download
from.

Cheers,
Philip

Thanks for taking this initiative, Philip. Perhaps some of us
can share the financial burden (small though it may be). I'd
be happy to send you five or ten if you can accept a check on
a US bank.

Actually, (procrastinator that I am) I had intended to do the same
thing myself, for two reasons: 1. As a service to our community;
2. To express my preference for the name ShawAlphabet.org rather
than shavian.org (no, I won't put up a competing site). :)

It's a minor point, but for the record, I prefer the term "Shaw
alphabet" to "Shavian" for these reasons:
1. Easier and more intuitive when heard aloud by someone unfamiliar
with it. When I say "Shavian," half the people think I said "shaving,"
and the other half haven't a clue what I'm talking about. If I say
"Shaw alphabet," everyone knows what an alphabet is; it's obvious
that Shaw is a surname; and it's even an easy guess that it's G. B.
Shaw.
2. Same, but less so, for the written form. The word "Shavian" is
rather Latinesque and I'll bet 90% of all people (Americans, anyway)
would not connect it with the name "Shaw," much less with the idea
of an alphabet.
3. The word "Shavian" is used in many circles to refer to Shaw --
literary, theatrical, political, and philosophical. A web search for
that word turns up thousands of links that are unrelated to the
alphabet. A search for "Shaw alphabet" would be much more precise...
but ONLY if people actually used that term. Even searching for
"Shavian" and "alphabet" can be a bit problematic depending on the
search engine.

Just some thoughts...

Cheers,
Hal Fulton
