The simple answer is: Each Unicode character is always 2 bytes, while UTF-8 characters vary in the number of bytes they take.
UTF-8 is an encoding of Unicode that is very popular since it allows ASCII text data to occupy one byte per character (thereby not taking up more space than ASCII), but allows someone to store the whole range of Unicode characters (albeit with a little more space taken up). There is no data loss converting from UTF-8 to Unicode and back.
For more on UTF-8 and its siblings (like UTF-16) check out www.unicode.org and enjoy. The reason why I use UTF-8 web pages is because that is the best Unicode standard out there for web pages and for ASCII characters there is no difference between an ASCII web page and a UTF-8 web page.

I won't be using this since it basically is only used in Microsoft's Internet Explorer. I would prefer to keep things as simple as possible and have the entire world enjoy Shavian.

yes but if someone had IE and they went to your page the proper font
would be downloaded automaticaly so that the people would see shavin
with out having to troubble them selves... thy would be more willing
to take a look if they did not have to download and install a font.
(some people cant do this simple task).

Subject: [shavian] Font Creator Program v2.2
Toggle Shavian
This shareware program for designing TrueType fonts can be found at:
http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,000XRB,.html
or at its creators' website:
http://www.high-logic.com/fcp.html
I have downloaded it. The accompanying tutorial isn't really adequate and it
is taking me some time to puzzle out the various features. However, it is
easy to adapt somebody else's Shavian font.
The ZDNet review follows:
Create and modify font files with ease
Company: High Logic
Size: 1.14 MB
Requirements: Pentium 100 and Windows 9x, NT, or 2000 [not the Mac]
Purchase Information: Shareware: Free to try, $35 if you decide to keep it.
Normally programs that make and modify TrueType fonts are pricey and hard to
use. Not so with the Font Creator Program. Use it to easily construct new
typefaces and edit existing TrueType font files that can be used in any
version of Windows (3.1 or later). An HTML-based tutorial gets you up to
speed quickly. The program's editor lets you choose any installed typeface,
displaying the entire character set complete with descriptions of every
letter, number, and special character. Convert scanned .bmp files to
TrueType outlines to make your own signature, logo, and handwriting fonts.
Unlimited undo and redo and repeat options are available. Once you're happy
with the results, the font can be installed on your system with a click on
the programs's toolbar.

Hello Shavia,
I registered the domain shavian.org. Perhaps it can turn into a site
promoting Shavian further. Unfortunately, I don't have the time nor the
means to develop the site myself. (Any offers for content? I can set up
anonymous FTP, for example.)
However, I offer e-mail forwarding with an address @shavian.org. Note that I
enter these forwarders by hand, so it might take a couple of days (depending
on how much else I have to do -- and whether I am checking my mail or not,
e.g. holidays) to set up. Note also that this service is provided on a
voluntary basis and may be withdrawn at any time. There are no guarantees of
availability or reliability, in part because the servers aren't under my
control. I also reserve the right to delete individual e-mail addresses for
abuse or other reasons. But I'll attempt to provide reasonable service.
If you want an address @shavian.org, please submit the address you want the
e-mail to end up at and the name you would like at shavian.org. Address this
request to shavian@....
If your name is taken or not available for another reason, I'll answer and
you'll have to pick another one.
I also may be providing web forwarding, pointing addresses at
www.shavian.org to your web site. This is not set up, yet. If you want to
pre-register, feel free to send mail to shavian@..., though.
Cheers,
Philip Newton
