Late last night I was reading through some of the old postings in the group archive, which can be quite interesting really, when the time and sometimes the date of the posting in question changed. An hallucination perhaps, which can be an unsettling but not necessarily unpleasant experience. I floated through several minutes of this wondering if i had actually gone bonkers before noticing a message at the top of the page reporting a scheduled maintenance at Yahoo to improve the Yahoo Calendar, whatever that is. The result is, or appears to be, that postings are now dated and timed according to the time-zone in which they originate(d), even retroactively, and not in the Pacific Standard Time of (presumably) Yahoo headquarters. Perhaps this is an improvement?

Yahoo continues to fiddle with the time and date of our past
postings. I suppose for some good reason. Earlier, I thought that:

This might however lead to the following predicament. Anyone who
posted something in a particular time-zone could receive a reply an
hour later from someone, say, in a time-zone two hours removed,
which would then be recorded as originating one hour earlier, if I have
understood correctly (always doubtful).

An intriguing concept, time, not as simple as one would imagine.
I submit once again a little ditty I saw somewhere and cannot
remember exactly but which went something like this:

Hello everyone,

My name is Jon and I came across the Shaw Alphabet just over a year ago. I quickly became interested in it and soon learned to read, write, type and even do a little programing to attempt to transliterate my favorite books. However despite all that I haven't had a chance to really use it. I was wondering if anyone wanted to become pen pals to practice :-) Or if any of you are very good at programing maybe we could work together on a transliteration App/Script. I've already done some work on my computer, integrating a weather feed and my calendar to display on my desktop in the shaw alphabet. I'm a bit geeky I guess. :-P

PS. I just bought the original Androcles and the Lion Shaw Alphabet edition on Amazon and plan to read it soon! :-)

For an example of what could be done with Shavian or quick write
check out the Unifon converter. You copy the text that you want
transliterated, and press convert.

Unifon and IPA are examples of scripts that use non-traditional letter
forms.
Unfortunately, the Unifon converter appears to be down at the present.

In both cases, you can immediately view the special characters.
Most people already have installed the IPA font, basically Unicode
Lucida with IPA extensions.
The Unifon converter will display the unifon chracters but unless you
have the Unifont
installed, you cannot cut and paste them into your message.

We started talking about this 5 years ago. If anyone has a link to a
converter for

I have too have a copy of the Penguin edition - Wondering how much it sold for on Amazon? Also would love to have that converter working again on the Shawvian site. Can't seem to get the font on my iMac ;-(

All I need to do now is get an ISBN, complete the cover, and send off the info to Cafe Press. The book will be called Poe Meets Shaw: The Shaw Alphabet Edition of Edgar Allan Poe. Included will be a wide variety of his works, including a selection of his poetry, horror stories, science fiction, science fact, literary reviews, philosophical treatises, plays, and even a documentary on how he wrote The Raven. Traditional spelling will be on the left, Shaw version on the right. The book will also include the Shaw Alphabet guide at the back as well as an explanatory section on aspects of the transliteration that I found it difficult to wrap my head around so that it'll be easier for other people to learn. Not only is there Shaw text in English, but also limited sections in French, Spanish, German, Russian, Latin, Italian and Ancient Greek (VERY limited in some cases) to really show off the diversity of the alphabet. All told, the book is 400 pages long and took over 9 years to complete.
