However, the Shavian text did not survive a third go-round in Yahoo.

I believe that in Unicode the spaces (and symbols) are in some
standard format, not necessarily of the font being used.

This used to be the way things had to be done before Unicode. One
wrote using a non-unicode Shavian font, which Yahoo could not handle,
and which appeared as a misspelling:
His iz a sentans. His wun is tM.
Copied to a text editor, one could then change the font and read
the message as intended. However, everyone quickly became adept
at reading the intermediate form and seldom bothered to continue.
Unicode was supposed to resolve this state of affairs. I wonder why
it didn't in your case, if you had a Unicode font installed.

Hello!
As usual, I can't make sense of the numbers. I'd be happy to have you scan
the message and send it to me that way, printed by machine or hand. I hope
that you will join our group!

Do you have a Shavian unicode font installed?
My last posting appears pretty much as intended
both on the Shawgroup webpage and in the daily
e-mail summary. It is not exact: it displays in
regular rather than a bold italic font, and the
spaces between words disappear. On my iPhone
however the message appears only as a series of
squares, which seems to be similar to the problem
you are encountering as I have no special fonts
installed here (I wouldn't know how to do so
anyway).

You can't install your own fonts onto iOS devices unless you jailbreak.
That doesn't mean every app is stuck with the system fonts, though; many apps bundle their own fonts, and @font-face (a way to tell a browser to download a font and use it for a particular webpage) works just as well in Mobile Safari as anyplace else.

Nathan, thank you for the tip about @font-face--a useful resource I would think. But, I wonder, if a non-roman font is selected for a website, in this case the Yahoo group page for the Shaw alphabet, wouldn't that mean that everything, all text, would be displayed in that font and not just those bits written using the Shaw letters?

No, if the font contains ASCII or Latin-1 etc in their Unicode
code points, you shall see them as expected.
See my page at
http://pok.heliohost.org/eo/tools/Sxava/sxava.html
which relies on
http://pok.heliohost.org/eo/tools/Sxava/this.css
which contains
@font-face {
font-family: Sxava;
src: local("MPH 2B Damase"),
local("ESL Gothic Unicode"), url(esl_gothic_unicode.ttf),
url(http://pok.heliohost.org/eo/tools/Sxava/esl_gothic_unicode.ttf) format('truetype');
font-weight: normal;
font-style: normal;
}
