Toggle Shavian
I've got it down as small as I can now. It'll be in 10 point fonts (the original was done in 12 point then scaled up from B5 to A4 paper, so will probably be closer to 14) and will be standard comic book dimensions and 125 pages long, so about the size of your average graphic novel and will cost only $14.99. ALL of the Poe materials from the original version will be there. The only real differences are that there will be NO traditional alphabet safety net except for VERY minor exceptions, everything that was in standard text only in the original book has been converted into Shavian except the covers and the copyright page, and the introduction has been slightly expanded to cover details on the creation of this new revision. It will be slightly delayed, however, as I currently have a help request in to Lulu regarding the necessary size of the bar code. If I can't get it out for the end of this year, then I will definitely get it released within the first 2 weeks of January.

I just finished sending all the files to Lulu for the condensed version of the book and ordered 7 copies for myself. When I get them, I'll check them out, and if they're as good as I think they'll be, then I'll open it up for the mass market. I also have a massive order for the original version on its way which should be arriving soon (I hope). If those are OK, then I'll probably just go ahead and assume that the condensed version will be OK as well and launch them together, just under the wire for the 50th anniversary.

Does an electronic text of Androcles in Shavian exist?

I'm not aware of one, but I'd be interested in one, too.
I wonder whether Thomas Thurman made one?

Yes, thanks to the efforts of, I believe, Lionel Ghoti.

A scanned copy, that is.
Incidentally, not that it is of any importance, but the new, improved,
Yahoo groups interface notation of the time postings are submitted has
after a bit of experimentation reverted back to what appears to be
Pacific Standard Time. The only consequence of this that anyone might
notice is that, depending upon where one lives, the date of posting
could display as having occurred on the previous day--something worth
perhaps a moment of amused contemplation.
contemplatively,

That's not an electronic _text_, though, as far as I can see -- it
looks like a scan, so it's more of an electronic _image_.
In particular, it's next to useless for text-based things such as
searching for a given word or typesetting it in a different font.

Philip

Electronic image then. However, I've always considered scanned copies,
if legible, preferable to electronic texts as the latter frequently
confuses letters it does not recognize, and does not maintain page and
paragraph layout that someone has put in an effort to render pleasing to
the eye. A lot of the Microsoft-funded conversions to electronic texts
suffer from this malady.
Besides, one can copy and paste (yes, tedious) the text from a scanned
copy and convert it to whatever font one wishes, and once in this form
any word can be found and replaced.

I need a Shavian-encoded text so that I can make a spell-check dictionary.
My fonts are ready for publishing Alice, but unfortunately I don't have a definitive text for Alice. What I have is actually transliterated from Deseret to Shavian, but that doesn't yield an entirely correct result.

Try getting hold of Thomas Thurman, who crowd-sourced a
standard-orthography-to-Shavian database.
It's not as authoritative as the published text of _Androcles_, and
may not be consistent with respect to accent/pronunciation/phoneme
inventory, but it may be better than nothing, if he still has it.
http://thurman.org.uk/thomas/ may help, or I could try to introduce
the two of you on Facebook.

I can imagine. (Though I found it interesting that Deseret seems to be
more conservative in its phoneme inventory and representation than
General American. That may depend on the person who transcribed
_Alice_, though.)
That said, an electronic text of Shavian _Androcles_ would *still* be
interesting to have. (Transcribed by a person, rather than by OCR.)

Philip
