Am having computer difficulties due to an attempt to get Yosemite
to work properly on an older machineโ€“โ€“the chief problem of course
is that I also have to struggle with a personal approach to problem-
solving established well before the computer age. At least thatโ€™s the
excuse I prefer, especially after being obliged to receive instruction
in how to operate an iPad from a four-year-old grandson. At any rate
I shall have to write this in standard orthography, or what I believe
you called โ€˜orthodoxโ€™.

Your King-Shaw keyboard looks to be imminently practical, putting
the vowels in the middle and finding a place for everything save the
compounds at the normal lower-case level. This would work well for
me as I donโ€™t bother with the compound letters (I find them cramped
and rather unattractive). You donโ€™t however appear to have a namer
dot, unless Iโ€™ve missed it, which could usefully be put up in the upper
left-hand corner ( ` ).

Of course, a Dvorak-like keyboard will require new demands upon
already overloaded memory cells but could be a stimulating challenge.
The keyboard input deviceโ€“โ€“if that is the correct termโ€” which I now
use (can be found in our files) is the one made by Scott Harrison, one
of our earliest members, in which the letters were assigned locations
according to a scheme devised some time ago by Ross DeMeyere, in
which I believe convenience and ease of use for beginners rather than
efficiency was the prime consideration. DeMeyere, a graphics designer,
also created the handsome Androcles font, one of the first Shavian fonts
made available, and one that closely resembles the typography used in
the dual-alphabetic "Androcles" published in 1962.

I wonder, looking at your blog again and comparing the visual
impression of your April Foolโ€™s post with the other entries, if you are
aware of a certain irony involved in using in the electronic world of
the internet an alphabet expressly designed to be written by hand.
If I understand correctly Kingsley Read took the trouble to create
Quickscript, putting much effort into the alteration of his letter-shapes
so that they could be easily written and joined together in script-form,
after noting the difficulty people had in writing his original alphabetโ€”
a difficulty that mostly disappears when using ready-made fonts online.
Eventually some capable person will give us a font with proper kerning
and his original alphabet will be lovelier than ever.

hope so,

DSh

I downloaded a keyboard but for some reason it still has squares when I type. How can I avoid this? I used the keyboard from the files page but it has not worked. Could my fonts not be working?

That's what I'd figure. What fonts are you using, what program are you typing text into, and what operating system are you on?

Have you been able to sort things out? I'm sure you've done everything right, but just in case, here's the procedure: you must have a Shavian font installed in your fontbook (or equivalent) and the keyboard from our files added to the keyboard folder (system preferences/keyboard/input sources--don't forget to check the box that displays available keyboards in the menu bar). Then when ready to type, select this keyboard in the menu bar (its name should be in Shavian letters). This should work--if not, then the previous suggestion is probably the only alternative: disable the Shavian fonts you have and download new copies. One must learn the letter arrangement that this keyboard uses (not all that difficult) but when in doubt there is a display in Input Sources. Everything is so much easier with a Shavian keyboard, but of course it does not improve one's calligraphic skills.

Good luck...

There are Canadian members of this group, and they may find this online article from the BBC interestingโ€“โ€“perhaps even accurate.

Well is it? It may well be. I've heard the historian Margaret MacMillan speak on television and she certainly sounds a little bit different from her colleagues at Oxford. But then so does Niall Ferguson (even more soโ€“โ€“but he's a Scot). If you are engaged in anything intellectual (or even not) but happen to be from somewhere not in the home counties, even if you were educated there, you are faced with the choice of adhering to, dare I say, (establishment?) social pressure or upholding what you may feel (if you do) to be your particular cultural heritage. Or it may simply be an unconscious processโ€“โ€“entirely, partially, or merely somewhat.

Wondering, againโ€“โ€“
