Hi Joe

This note of yours brings up a good point.
Consonant doubling in Shavian.
Obviously Consonant Doubling is not done done in Shavian to
preserve a Short vowel as is done in T.O. for English.
It pretty well has to indicate a Syllable boundary, where the
first of the 2 consonants, indicates the end of the first syllable
annd the second consonant, indicates the beginning of the second
syllable.
However, I do notice that in Ordinary Amercan Pronunciation at
least, the sound of first of the doubled consonants regularly gets
dropped.
Can anyone give me some good word examples, where consonant doubling
or sharing across syllable boundaries is preserved and would be
apparent in the writing of the word in Shavian Letters.
Regards, Paul V.
P.S. I only notice it very rarely. I will try to recall where.

You make it sound like you've been awarded an Oscar :P

It's not that much of a big deal - it just means you can keep spammers away,
keep the vault tidy (if I haven't done it already) and such like. There's
never been any issues here of members being obscene/abusive, or completely
off topic - the last group lasted OK without a moderator for 4 years, before
the spammers arrived, so there won't be a lot to do here I suspect.

P.S. 'Bounced' means an email couldn't reach someone. In the group it means
members whose email addresses are no longer active.

Hi Hugh
I do consider it an award, albeit as you say, it may not be that big
a deal, if you know what you are doing.
Unfortunately, I have never moderated a Yahoo group, before.
So I have a lot to learn.
As you are handling all the issues or setting them to default to
standard automatic processing, there may not be much for me to do at
the moment. But I would like to learn and be prepared to do more if
the need arises. I hope you and Philip don't mind, if I ask you the
odd precedural question from time to time?

Thanks again, Paul V.

There really isn't much to do at all, at the moment. All you have to do, for
now, is just 'be a moderator', i.e. carry on as before. Of course ask us
questions, but I'm pretty sure there'll be none to ask yet, because there's
nothing to do yet. The only thing you would do really is ban spammers and/or
inappropriate posters, and since there aren't any causing trouble at the
moment...

Perhaps I talked up this whole moderator thing a bit much! :-S

Paul

The stuff I've been moving to the new vault IS the stuff from the old vault!

I've added a few fonts that weren't there before, and I intend to add links
to every Shavian site currently on the net, plus archive.org links to sites
that are now dead (such as Lionel Ghoti's).

It's also possible to give the web interface for the group a certain colour
scheme and/or backdrop - I had a thought that it would be good to give it an
"Androcles-esque" feel, i.e. black/orange/white?

The group has a Yahoo chat room built in - Yahoo Groups have had them for
years, but nobody here has ever used it. I thought it would be nice to try
to make it possible to chat real-time in Shavian, but I don't know how
difficult that would be with the Yahoo built-in room. It might have to be
hosted on a third-party web site.

Hugh,

Did you ever determine what was the first choice for the Shavian font.
I would prefer one that it more compact or condense than Lionspaw.
I am not quite ready to try unicode Shavian.

Hi Steve

It had been Ghoti in the past (Ross DeMeyere's excellent gothic font).
However, perhaps we could now use Phillip Driscoll's Shaw Sans No.2, as used
in the Ikonboard forum? I believe it to be the most compact, well-balanced
font available.

Hi Steve
It had been Ghoti in the past (Ross DeMeyere’s excellent gothic font).
However, perhaps we could now use Phillip Driscoll’s Shaw Sans No.2, as used in the
Ikonboard forum? I believe it to be the most compact, well-balanced font
available.

Hugh,

Did you ever determine what was the first choice for the Shavian font.
I would prefer one that it more compact or condense than Lionspaw.
I am not quite ready to try unicode Shavian.

Hugh,

I agree with your selection:

Shaw Sans No. 2

will be the preferred font for Shavian transcriptions on this site.

It will be available in the file section of Shawalphabet
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/shawalphabet/files

-----Steve

Transcriptions:

SY sAnz #2 wil bI H prIfDd fynt fP
SEvian trAnzskripSanz yn His sFt.

Compare the DeMeyere keyboard mappping to ENgliS
and Unifon below. For novices, these are easier to learn and use.
These are not necessarily optimal but they are more optimal in terms of
reading & writing ease than DeMeyere. There is less to relearn.

So sqnz #2 wil bE D prEfRd fcnt for

SAvian trqnzkripSanz on* Dis sIt

Sx sanz #2 wil bE D prEfcrd font fOr
SAvicn tranzkripScnz on Dis sIt

R /3/ is recognized as one of the phonemes of spoken English (obscure vowel)
but

it is not uniquely represented in the alphabet. /3`j/ is spelled urge,
/3`nd/ is spelled earned

/s3`f@`/ surfer. ENgliS & Shavian handle this well: Rj, Rnd, sRfar
Shavian:. xj, xnd, sxfD/sxfar. Unifon does not: urj, urn, surfcr.

I want a uni-key that can be taught to everyone and used to display any set
of special characters such as Shavian, Unifon, i/t/a, Webster, or IPA.

uni-key would be use as the keyboard map and for discussing speech sounds in
ASCII email.

The next step up would be a more natural looking digraphic/accented phonemic
writing system [Webster Latin 1].
Shô wil bé ð préfûrd fönt fôr Sháviøn transkripshønz ön ðis sýt.

Webster Latin 1 can be easily typed after a 5 min. installation of the
International keyboard.
95% of the email editors can interpret these codes but sometimes they are
auto-converted to Unicode which cannot be interpreted by some email editors.
