Subject: Simon Barne's Shavian imagery

Toggle Shavian
This is a bit of a long shot, but I'm hoping somebody will be able to help
out...

You might not have noticed, but I've been building up the vault in this new
group with applications and documents from the old one. The nice "Photos"
feature of Yahoo Groups allows us to have picture files displayed in
'albums' with thumbnail views, for easier browsing of images.

I've only got a few there thus far. I already copied the wonderful must-read
"Shaw Script" scans from the old vault to the new one - I really should've
put the images in the "Photos" section instead, to allow easier browsing of
the pages. I'll do something about that sometime.

One set of pictures I REALLY miss - I don't know if anyone else here agrees
- is the collection of 'altered images' Simon Barne did years ago. Remember
the tweaked corporate logos, the altered photos, the doctored magazine
covers (e.g. Life Magazine, advertisements on a street corner, McDonalds
logo, etc.) - he did plenty of them, and they were all fairly convincing.
His website(s) has been offline for ages, www.archive.org doesn't have any
of those images among its archives of his site, and I hadn't saved any of
them. So it seems they're all lost...

...UNLESS someone here had the foresight to save some, or hopefully ALL, of
those images to their computer before Simon's site went offline?

Could we all please have a root around?

Thanks very much

Hugh B

I agree with the choice of Shaw Sans 2 as the standard font. The letter shapes are the
best I've seen, but it has some rough edges, and the spacing makes it hard to read at
small sizes, at least on my Mac. Has anyone else noticed these problems? It's a great
font, but I think it needs some improvement.

I've noticed that, too. I'm going to try to find some time this week
to smooth some of the curves and add hinting so it looks better
on screen.

I'm happy that so many people like the font.

:D Fantastic Phillip. If you're able to make an already great font even
better, do go ahead!

Didn't you say something years ago about kerning?

Hugh B

P.S. Joe, if you have Windows XP and a TFT/Trinitron monitor, use ClearType
to make fonts look as they should at small sizes.

Yes, I remember reading that too. A little kerning would probably
help.

I use a Mac, which has font smoothing equivalent to ClearType. The
problem is that the font lacks hinting instructions, and the
smoothed edges tend to run into each other sometimes. For example,
letters like \a\ and \E\ often end up looking like they're connected
to the next letter at small sizes.
I was poking around in a copy of the font and started cleaning up
some of it myself, but I thought it would be better to go to the
original designer. I also don't know how to do the hinting
correctly. I normally rely on auto hinting, which usually isn't
very good.

In any case, I've been working on a number of Shavian fonts in the
hope that Shavian can have the same variety and creative freedom
that Roman does now. I've made some that probably won't be liked by
many pedants, like the one in which all the letters have the same
height for a sort of capital look. I've made sure they're all
readable, though. But among all this, it's good to have a font like
Shaw Sans No. 2 that's clear and compact.

I think that's a useful alternative to have. It reminds me of
Georgian, which doesn't (now) have upper- and lower-case letters, but
they do have a style of font where all letters are the same height
which they use for titles and the like; this appears similar.

Subject: Shavian Links at Shavian.Org

Toggle Shavian
Hi Hugh

I happened to notice that some of our Shavian Links on the
Home page are a bit out of date. In fact the sites of Garry Shannon,
Simon Barnes and Lionel Ghoti no longer exist. Also the link
marked "Shavian in Unicode Standard" needs to be pointed to
an existing location.

But instead of just turfing out these old links, perhaps people
can suggest additional links, pertinent to other like minded
individuals, who wished to learn the Shavian Alphabet.

Personally, I like www.omniglot.com as it has good discussion of not
just Shavian, but also what an Alphabet is. It is an amazing site for
people interested in Alphabets and other writing systems.

Also there is
http://victorian.fortunecity.com/vangogh/555/Spell/shaw-alfa.html
I don't know who set it up. But there is a lot there.
Including a Gerge Bernard Shaw Preface which discussess quite clearly
the roots of the Shavian Alphabet, and his actual intentions when
creating the Shavian Alphabet.
He also had a plan for simplifying English grammar for foreigners
(Americans?) and the uneducated British lower classes.

So any other suggestions on good Shaw Alphabet Sites? I quite like
the idea of www.shavian.org being the entry point or portal to a
number of Shavian sites.

Regards, Paul V.

In response to Lee's response,

Don't forget I made it clear that the individual sites would not have
to be adandoned. On the contrary, I also believe that having various
sites of different strengths is a good thing here (for example I
would not remove my own Shavian site from the web). What I was
suggesting is that there be a central, focal point where the
knowledge of ALL the various Shavian fans is brought together, so
that support can be consolidated;
this will not REPLACE
the current sites but will ADD to them. It will do the influence of
the alphabet a whole heap of good, because newcomers will receive a
far stronger view of support for the alphabet - far more than the
separate individual sites give at this moment.

Hugh

P.S. Who else says 'aye'? I'm waiting for everyone to comment...
