Subject: Re: Learning to Read with Shavian
Hi Scott
That's an interesting article. I couldn't read the keyboard Unifon
or the others, even though I've studied them a little, but I breezed
right through the Shavian at a rate that surprized even myself,
until I got to the word "appreciated", which is not spelled the way
I pronounce it.
I've found that Shavian was easier to learn than I first expected.

Subject: Loading a standard font
Toggle Shavian
Hi Jerry
I said in a previous post that I would describe how to set up a
Shavian Font on your PC running Windows 98.
I don't know if it will work on the Library PC.
I lot of Libraries do allow you to load a new font from the internet
or will load it for you on the PC you are using.
You just give the details, and they can set it up.
1. Go to Internet and connect to www.shavian.org
2. Click on here.
3. Select Shaw Sans No. 2 from list of available fonts and click on
it.
4. A panel will come offering to download the True Type file (.ttf)
5. Click Save.
6. When it finish another panel will come up, saying the Downlod was
successful and which folder the font was stored. Click Close.
The Font called Cshaw2.ttf is now on your computer.
To Activate the Font and make it available to the Forum or your word
processor.
1. Click on Start in bottom Lefthand corner of your PC
2. Click on Settings
3. Click on Control Panel
4. You should see a File Folder called Fonts.
Click on it to open of the Fonts Folder.
5. Go back to the Desk top (Screen background) to find the file
Cshaw2.ttf and drag and drop it into the Fonts Folder.
Close all the folders.
The Shaw Sans No. 2 Font will now Show up instead of Roman letters
when you type in the Shaw Chat Forum.
It is also available on your word processor (i.e. Microsoft Word,
Notepad, etc) by selecting Shaw Sans No. 2 from within the W.P.

I vote for a Unicode font. I haven't seen either of the ones named, so I
can't choose between them. I'd vote for the one that most closely resembles the
Stephen Austin types used in Androcles.

Unicode is out of the question at this point as far as the list is
concerned. Many months ago we established that most mailreaders can't handle
it effectively.

The rule of thumb here has always been, since people last attempted to post
in Shavian at all (a long time ago I must admit), use the GHOTI font. It
started off with Lionspaw, but Ghoti quickly took over as it is a better
designed typeface. I suggest that people use it in correspondence here if
they must pick one font; but that's only if people here actually have Ghoti
installed these days. Whatever, it doesn't matter.

Mail client is AOL's rather minimal one. I could use Earthlink's, or get any
Mac compatible mail client.

Outlook 2003 doesn't support it well enough. All I see in Shavian Unicode
messages is question marks, just like it was with Outlook Express. Microsoft
don't seem to consider plane 1 points as a priority in their upgrades.
By the way I've already developed an XP keyboard layout that produces the
Unicode points, in the same layout as we're all used to. I'll root around
tonight and see if I can find it.

Many months on the Internet is extraordinarily long with regard to software
versions.
Therefore, I would like to know what versions of operating system and mail
reader are people using. I imagine for a lot of combinations we can find
solutions that allow Unicode to work properly. Perhaps all of the list
members will be able to get a Unicode solution working and therefore we can
finally show Shavian as it should be -- in combination with any other set of
characters we want.

By the way, I should be getting all my XP stuff in the next month or so, and
hope to be able to find time to work on XP stuff in January. Therefore, I
may be able to provide keyboard input methods that generate the proper
Shavian Unicode on XP as well as Mac OS X.

Hi Scott
I am using Eudoria as my Mail Client, because Outlook was too Virus
Friendly. Eudoria is a very nice product with an easy to install
Shareware version. You might want to see if it has the level of
Unicode support yyou need. It is probably the 2d most common Email
program for the Windows Platform.
My Operating is Windows 98 Second edition, but I was expecting to
have to upgrade to Windows XP Pro in the near future.
I can speed up the process, if we were to have the benefit of being
able to read and write UNICODE in our E-Mail.
Regards, Paul V.
P.S. Please keep me up to date on this issue.
