Well, I don't suppose it would be very difficult to create all the
letters, but it would certainly be pointless. There is just too much
variation. Anyway, I've changed my spelling aso that I only spell
these vowels with one letter, and I haven't encountered any problems
with it yet.

Actually, I don't distinguish them at all. I pronounce the vowels of
both as a diphthong of E followed by a rhotic schwa (Yeah, my Rs are
rhotic). In shavian, I would write both of them as fX.

I still don't see any need to write the hard G. We pronounce it that
way naturally based on its environment. In the middle of a word, it
will always have a hard g. At the end of a word, it will not.
Finger = fiNgD
Singer = siND
Same 'environment', different pronunciations. 'Singer' doesn't have a hard g yet the ng occurs in the middle of the word.

Hi Joe
Even though it can be determined relatively consistently from letter
position within word, the whole point of the Shaw Alphabet is to
spell words phonetically. Along as there is variation in how this
Phonome is pronounced, we need to explicitly add the Hard G or K
sound. I think anyway, that the Hard G is lost not just at the end of
words, but occassionally in the middle of some words with NG, too.
Anyway for now, I will continue to put in the hard G in the
relatively few words where it is explicitly pronounced. (i.e. finger)

Hi Joe
Excuse me. Wrong assumption on my part.
I also spell fair and fare as fX.
Regards, Paul V.
P.S. I also toyed with the idea of having some of the less frequent
Dipthongs, represented by a Generic symbol. (i.e. Oui {French},
iu in few and beautiful, oa in Boa), but I prefer to spell Boa as bOa.

There already is a dipthong for iu. Few would be pronounced as
fee+yew. L8r.

Hi Joe
My pronunciation for "few" is not so pronounced.
If I was to use "yew" in my spelling of few,
I would write it as just f+yew.
IU and "ee"+"yew" in my mind is most associated with the interjection
or emotive used to express extreme disgust.
For example, Stephanie on the Bob Newhart show used to use it
frequently with great effect.
Any other opinions on the pronounciation of "few"?

Actually, that's how I pronounce it, too. "Fee" is just the name of
the F character. BTW, my name's not Joe, it's Tim. L8r.

Good news! Unicode 4.0 is now officially released, and Shavian is now
officially a part of Unicode. I was especially happy to see that the "SHAVIAN

The official data file for Unicode can be found at

I have included the Shavian portion below. The code points are in the first
