Thanks to everyone who responded regarding the weekly transliteration project: really, it warmed the cockles of my heart to read your messages. I think we have enough people to get going. How do Sundays grab you? If this is okay, I'll draw up a tentative rota and post it this weekend, the first date being the Sunday after that. For want of a better system, I'm just going to list people in the order that they responded to my "The Kingsley Reader" message. Then, if anyone finds the order inconvenient because it clashes with hair-washing appointments, I'll rejig it.

Dear Philip,
I was the one who sent you the first part of Shaw's "Androcles," and will send the rest as soon as possible. I was in the hospital; when I got back my old computer wouldn't work at all! It died (perhaps cat-assisted suicide) while I was gone. I finally got an iMac. Disadvantage: It's taking a while to learn how to use. Advantage: I should be able to download the Shavian fonts on this new machine.
My mailing address is : Rev. Dr. Daniel G. Szczurek, MST, Ph.D.
7425 Ruby Drive, SW, Condo #D-12
Lakewood, WA 98498-5062
USA
I will get the remainder of "Androcles" off to you as soon as possible.
Sincerely, Dan
PS--Does anyone know if it's possible to have a complete nervous breakdown while trying to operate a new computer?

Dear fellow Shavianists,

I promised someone to send him some Asterix comics in Plattdeutsch (Low German) in return for something he sent me. However, to my disgrace I can't remember who that was. Will the rightful recipient of the books please stand up? (And send me his mailing address.)

(P.S.: It's really annoying trying to type the same message first in Shavian and then in English... I keep trying to type Shavian abbreviations and spelling; for example "to come" might end up as "t kum"...)

Dear Hal,
I have been off-line for some time because my computer died. I think
your ideas are excellent ones and would be of great use.
I have worked with intelligent students who have a hard time learning to
read. Since they were given up as hopeless, I was allowed to do with them
what I wanted. I taught them in a phonetic spelling using the Latin
alphabet--didn't know about Shavian yet. Then we transferred gradually to
present English spelling. I wrote a reverse dictionary (Phonetic to
Standard) for my students to use, when they had trouble spelling. Their
reading and spelling got better just from frequency of use. If they were
unsure of the spelling of a word, they looked it up phonetically and found
the Standard Spelling.
The use of 2 alphabets for the same language didn't strike me as odd,
perhaps because one of my major languages was Hindi-Urdu, basically the same
language written in Sanskrit script by Hindus and Arabic script by Muslims.

And of course Serbo-Croatian is basically the same language, but written
in Latin script by the Croats and in Cyrillic by the Serbs.

And Moldovian (written in Cyrillic) and Romanian (Latin); Tajik (Cyrillic)
and Persian (Arabic). And Kurdish is, to my knowledge, written in both
Arabic and Latin depending on where the Kurds live.

Cheers,
Philip

That's one reason why I chose "Utopia". It's out of copyright.
Of course I could transcribe some of my own diatribe...

Were you intending to instruct us on what to transcribe (translate?

INSTRUCT you??? No, of course not; I wasn't intending to instruct anyone on anything. I said the exact opposite.
