I would love to write in shavian.
I view this list through the Yahoo groups website. I cannot post in
shavian at all. I _sometimes_ see other peoples attempts in shavian
properly, though mostly it is just clabbertrap.
Thanks
Joseph

Hi Ethan
I usually view the postings through the Yahoo groups website.
I don't know how to Post messages in
shavian at all.
I am using Windows 98 SE at home with Eudora as my E-Mail software.
I used to use Outlook for Office and Home, but I found it was too
big a target for viruses, and acted flacky, so I switched to Eudora
4 Years ago.
Eudora works very well.
Regards, Paul V.
P.S. The Ikon boards at www.shavian.org allows for easy Shaw
alphabet message posts, and is well worth taking a look.
P.P.S. Even though I prefer Shavian, and am fully familar with
keyboard mapping, I still find it a bit more time-consuming to write
using
using the Shaw Alphabet. Reading is even harder, until I get more
familar, with the persons conventions and accent.

Hi Joseph,
Your Right I was ponder Shavian after my last post last week and realized that Shavian is indeed Phonemic. Everybody speaks differently, but we can understand each other, anyway. Why? Because intuitively we are phonemic. And words in English are pronounced differently, but this is only phonetically, not phonemically.
cheers,
Carl

Shavian is _not_ a phonetic alphabet.
Shavian _is_ a phonemic alphabet.
Thanks

Ethan,
I use Yahoo for my e-mail. What this means is that html sent to this
address through yahoogroups will show up, the downside is that I have
no idea how to use html myself.

P.s. I got a new computer for yule, and am now currently running
windows... Yay, progress.

I figured I should also mention what software I use.
I access the list from two different computers. One runs Windows 98, the other
runs Mandrake Linux 9.0. On the Linux machine I use Mozilla 1.5 for email
access, and on the Windows machine I use the email client in Opera 6.05. I
rarely ever visit the website, and have never had to post from there.
I have no trouble with Shavian of various kinds using Mozilla under Linux. I
can read it in html "romaji" or in Unicode. Where I have problems is when I'm
using the Windows 98, which doesn't fully support Unicode. HTML "romaji" comes
through pretty good though.
Soon I will see if I can offer some tips on the various ways to get Shavian text
working with the different setups.

Well, I decided to make all my Shavian fonts contain
the characters at the correct Unicode points. So I took
a look at the current Unicode standard (4.0), and I see
they have assigned Shavian beginning at position
10450 (hex). That will require three bytes. I'm afraid my
font making tool (Fontographer 4.1) cannot handle code
points greater than two bytes (FFFF hex). I realize there
are better and newer tools, but I cannot afford to buy a
different program at this time.
Another question. Unicode does not define the namer
dot as part of Shavian. What other Unicode character
will users of Shavian utilize as the standard for the dot?
