I used to use linux. I called it the "it will be here on thursday" OS,
because it was incomplete until my husband could look at it, but he
never did. Then again, when they make a computer that doesn't crash and
is universally compliant, pigs will be fluttering about in the skies.
As for the universal solution to the shavian e-mail problem, the
internet is set up for standard english and TO, not for shavian or just
about any other language (except maybe korean, but I haven't quite
figured that one out).

Good news, for me at least...
My website - if you remember it - now has a new host that will NEVER be shut
down (as long as I keep up the payments)!
You can now find it at http://mixsynth.fearfulsilence.com/.
All the Shavian fonts are already there so if you need any Shavian font,
have a look. All the Shavian texts are being uploaded shortly.
Have fun,

I was just thinking that someone could make a Shavian-style alphabet
in which you would have the 27 Roman characters (the ones used in
daily writing, and the ones I am using now.)to write with. Of course,
I doubt this would be possible, or that anyone would accept it. Email
me at Welsoftorig@... if you are at all remotely interested on
this subject.

What do you mean with "Shavian-style"?
That the letters resemble the ones in Read's alphabet in shape? That
each letter identifies a certain sound, and only that sound?
I presume the latter -- and then it simply isn't possible with only the
26 letters (not sure where you get 27 from) of traditional orthography,
since there are simply more than 26 sounds in English.
It is, of course, possible for other languages which have fewer sounds,
but not for English. (And if you allow for multiple letters to
represent one sound, you can cover even more languages -- for example,
I have heard that Finnish spelling is [nearly?] phonemic, but it uses
doubled letters to indicate long vowels, for example.)
Cheers,
Philip

Hi W. and Philip
W.
Why would you bother making a Shavian Style Alphabet out of Roman
Letters? There are two or 3 good Phonetic Alphabets out there already.
There is the CUT alphabet, and my personal favorite the ASCII
phonetic alphabet
In the ASCII Phonetic Alphabet, he uses a period to indicate a
syllabic consonant, (g.r.l => girl) double periods to indicate a
Schwa sound in the middle of a syllable and a Colon to indicate that
the vowel sound has been lengthened into a similar but different
sound. See info at Antimoon.com.
So for example fit is fit and fi:t is feet,
kot is cot and ko:t is caught
fob is fob and fo:th.r id father
kofi: is coffee and ko:f is cough
dok is Doc and do:g is dawg
fut is foot and fu:d is food
fat is fat and fa:t is fight
fet.r is fetter and fe:t is fate and so on.
This significantly reduces the vowel letters needed to write English.
And most of all,if you don't mind differentiating between Upper and
Lower Case, W. Why don't you
just use our regular Shaw Keyboard mapping. If you don't have the
font loaded you see the words, in Roman Letters in any case.
Regards, Paul V.

You still have Simon Barnes in your lisst of links. I think his site

Anyone know what happened to Simon Barnes?

Hi Paul
Basically the website is the same version as was there when the plug was
pulled last May. I haven't done anything to it, merely re-uploaded it as it
was then. When I get a chance I will renew it and clean out all the old dead
links (including Simon Barnes's site).
Hopefully - and I say hopefully - I can host my Shavian forums now, and
improve them somewhat. I'll see how much more space I can get myself...

Hi Hugh,
I too have taken a good look at your website since it was restored. I was (am) impressed by it. I agree that one of Shavian's many uses is to write in English, is without worrying about spelling. Which kinda goes back to what I wrote earlier of the "Three Ways to Spell English Words in Shavian". Which are for those who forgot, as the following:
1.Dictionary Pronouncation
2. Inferement from T.O.
3. And Personal Pronouncation.
The Third way is the way we use Shavian when away from a text and dictionary. (Basically, self-composition -- new writing)
But the First way is desirable when writing Shavian for the public and the Second way is when away from a dictionary and transliterating a text.
Anyways thanks for supporting Shavian, Hugh,
best regards,
Carl
