Spam. I'm surprised to see it here, as I haven't before - I guess I'm
going to be adding another spammer to my spam filter! It's unfortunate
that nobody has control over the group settings, so a dedicated spammer
could subscribe and send tons of spam and nobody can do a thing about it...

Yes, i looked into the possibility of assuming moderatorship a while ago, but was told by yahoo staff that they never, under *any* circumstances, reassign it without the original moderator's consent. They even refused to do it in a case when the original moderator was verifiably dead.
So were stuck with the spam im afraid.

Hi Hugh and Ethan
If the Spam problem persist you will have to start another Yahoo
group in anycase. How does everyone feel about moving?

I'd prefer not to, but if the majority does, I will, too.

I do hope we're not all talking about moving now just from having
received one or two spams to the list. Maybe we should decide on a
ratio; say if more than 30% of the postings are spam, then we move;
something like that.

I agree - one spam is not enough to move yet.
I have e-mail addresses on websites and these are predominantly spam but
I keep them open for the one or two genuine e-mails.

We've had more before. Mind you they've only been coming in ones and twos so
far so I think we're OK for now.
Starting a new group would be the last resort, as we would lose the 5-year
archive of previous postings. We can't even contemplate losing the archive -
it's an invaluable Shavian resource in its own right. I would have to ask
Yahoo Groups if they could somehow collate the archived postings into one
single file and send it to us before risking losing it (they would close the
group if nobody posted to it for a while). We would also have to re-stock
the vault with all the files/transliterations and that would take a long
time.

If we were to forgo using yahoo we could host in on one of our own
servers (yes, that means I can volunteer to have it done on my own
server -- perhaps shavian.org would actually be the address but that is
not quite up to me to decide). If my machine were to be used, the
mailing list would be "mailman" which permits self-join, etc. But I
also have some level of SPAM filtering, and of course I can blacklist
people, etc. as appropriate.
We would have to get the previous posts from yahoo and ensure they
were made available on our new server. That is not an impossible task.
Also we would probably want to have everyone transferred over from
yahoo as well. If I were given a list of email addresses then I could
easily set up the list with those members.
Note "mailman" is not a message board -- but a mailing list. Each
member would need a separate mail account to which email could be sent.
It can be batched and sent once a day -- or each message separately,
but there needs to be a mail account. People can read the posts from
the web as well. However, there is no group chatting or things like
that.
Normally I do not allow people to post files to a vault. However, if
we were really going to move from yahoo I could investigate a secure
way to have this happen. I am not sure how much storage is involved,
so anyone with that information, please forward that to me.
I really do not want to have to go about joining a different yahoo
group since I remember nothing about my login nor my password.
Therefore, I cannot change my info, join new groups, etc. I would have
to go about making a new me and that would not be fun.
