Hi Tony

I set up a new topic at Hugh's Ikonboard at his website over at
www.shavian.org.
Click on Shavian Chat and look for the new post called
Shaw Pen Pals.
It's a place where you
start up a conversation and learn Shaw.
You can reply to my original message.
Just click on Shaw Pen Pals, read the message and click on the reply
button.
It will open up a window to type in your reply in Shavian.
You need to fill in your name. I don't think you have be registered
to just reply but it does need a name in the name field.
Let me know if you need more info about the keyboard mapping for the
Shaw Alphabet. A lot of the letters are just the phonetic equivalent
of the Roman Alphabet. For example, press the B and you get the Shaw
eqivalent letter on your screen.
Anyway give it a try.

Regards, Paul V.

P.S. If you haven't installed the Shaw font from Hugh's webpage into
your windows, you will still see all the letters in the Roman
Alphabet.

So, we need to make new fonts? I don't really have any experience beside computer

Subject: [shavian] Summer Doldrums - Question of Order

Toggle Shavian
Hi Everybody
Since the lethargy of the summer has arrived, and there are no other
pressing issues, I want to throw open a question to the group.
In a manner of speaking, it is a contest.
It is called "Name that Letter".
As I mentioned before, the current names of the SHAW Letters leave a
lot to be desired. The names as such provided with the introduction
to Shaw in Androcles are more sample words, rather than Names. Who
would really name a letter "Dead" or "Err" or "ha-ha".

I am going to provide my suggestion just to start everything off,
but I would prefer something more original and distinctive.
The original name/sample word is provided in brackets.
I have also put the letters in a little different order.
Feel free to make suggestions on the order of the 48 Shaw Letters.
1. Adu, "a" (ado) ado, along, awake, alert
2. Alef, "A" (ash) ash, amber, ant, identify
3. Ail, "F" (ice) ice aisle, iron
4. Bet, "b" (bib) bib, baby
5. Gimel, "g" (gag) gag, gun, gold
6. Delta, "d" (dead) dead

* indicates where the standard pronuncation of sample word has
changed since 1960, when Androcles was transliterated.

So hey everyone.
We have to get out of the Doldrums. Name a Shaw Letter.

Regards, Paul V.

Hi,

I would suggest we do two things:

(1) refrain from naming letters other than the way they are named in
the Unicode standard
(2) refrain from adding letters to the alphabet

The ordering of letters in the alphabet may be an interesting project,
but we have a default order as it is presented in the Unicode standard.
Therefore, we really need not work on that either.

Therefore, I suggest we do something else, like work on reprinting
Androcles and the Lion, publishing more texts, etc.

Hey Everyone! How would you like a computer program to convert
roman text to Shavian? I am currently working on that right now, as
a matter of fact. There are a few tweaks i need to work out before
I allow a beta release. I would much appreciate any help, comments
or suggestions.
Also, I need to know any serious changes to spelling that differ
from DeMeyere's standard. Although I have been using Shavian on and
off for the past three years, I have just joined this group. I'm
finding the spelling unpleasently subjective, and I find that the
way that people normally have spelled things greatly affects how
they spell in Shavian. Do we have set standards on some spellings?
There are so many posts on this website I'm not sure what's
important.
Thanks all,
-Nick

I think Andy Callaway already provided one, but the more the merrier :)

This has been one of the points of contention recently on this group,
so you've touched a sore point. I don't think we have consensus on
spelling.

I personally am on the side of Hugh, which is to use the spelling of
the American Heritage Dictionary (not AHD for Learners) as exemplified
e.g. on dictionary.com, whose pronunciation key is fairly close to the
speech of _Androcles_ and makes more distinctions than General American
does.

Any program you write would have to use a dictionary, I imagine, since
I doubt rule-based spelling would get you very far. In which case
people who disagree with your spelling could simply replace or modify
the spelling dictionary your program uses.

Cheers,
Philip
