Seems to me simple enough to use hw. I don't even know why they altered
the spelling from hw to wh in Middle English. People would probably be
more aware of the difference if they had to spell hwich, hwales, hwine,
hwere and hwit, compared with witch, Wales, wine, wear and wit.

It might make some difference to you - but not to me.
In this instance it is because I download messages by daily digest.
Sometimes yahoo is kind enough to send messages coded as Unicode.
In that case Shavian and Latin come through correctly.
But yahoo - good name - rarely takes the trouble.
It happens more often on translators' lists, when people sometimes
give instances of Japanese or Chinese coding.
If the encoding is ever changed, the same sentence can come out as
several different patterns, depending on the mappings at different
stages of the process.
Sometimes what used to be called control codes creep into the text,
causing havoc with things like screen settings.
All in all, yahoo is not a very satisfactory way to exchange messages
in Shavian.

I continue aligning classics in several languages, and want to keep
them as plain text without any formatting whatsoever, I have
Androcles as a model, but the problems are different when the text is
not a playscript but a novel. Italics go. Punctuation marks are used
as required, including ampersand and ellipsis. Titles lose their
capitals and abbreviation marks. I use namer dots but link names:
sir .Roger_de_Coverley. It works.

If anyone else wishes to try it, can I recommend "CAT's Cradle"?
(>Computer Assisted Translation).

ASCII.

view represented accurately.
I would also like to include myself in the Majority,
by saying that I can also hear the difference
between the voiced (w) and unvoiced w-sound usually written
as "wh". Sometimes the unvoiced w-sound is written as a "u"
after a "q", in words like "quit", "quake" or "quiet".
Actually, all "qu" words, I guess.

In your examples I typically hear it only in the word "why".
In "how" and "who" the "wh" sound seems to have faded even more
until only the h-sound remains. It is interesting that English
has the un-voiced w-sound and the voiced th-sound which are
associated only with particular Grammatical words.

P.S. I would like a Shaw "wh" sound letter. We could call it a While,
because it my take awhile before everybody uses it.
P.P.S. I like the use of word shibboleth. It's actual meaning is as
a Hebrew test word, that you can use to test Foreigners. If they can
say it properly they are a native Jew. Unfortunately, a native
Englishman can have such a wide range of pronunciation, I would
hesitate to guess what word could be used for that purpose.
There are phrases, Isuppose.
Maybe, "She sells Seashells at the Seashore"
Or "Peter picked a peck of pickled peppers"

Thanks for explaining. You are lucky to be able to read phonetically.
It really helps to understand and comprehend the material.
It it improve retention. Speed reading amd scanning are more useful
for finding your way around a long wordy document, which
unfortunately is more common today.
Interestingly, my English teacher told us that Poems had to be read
aloud to be fully understood. Most of the emotional meaning of the
Poem is in the sound and rhythm of the spoken words.
