Dear all,

I use evolution as my e-mail reader on Linux and was just wondering how
I can read the e-mails from this group in a Shavian script - I have
Unicode support etc and Shavian fonts in the system.

I just get tired of copying and pasting the text into open office and
changing the font.

Perhaps you already have what you need to make it work? If so, then you
should be able to read the text below.

Personally, I long ago got tired of messing with all the junk that
requires pasting into another application and changing fonts. That's
not how computers are designed to work, and that's why we went to all
the trouble to get Shavian included in Unicode. So I for one would
greatly appreciate it if everyone would start using it! Linux works, I
believe I heard that Mac OS X works, I know Windows XP and newer work
(on XP you may have to change something in the registry to enable
Unicode surrogates, the instructions are on the web), and the fonts have
been available for years now. I posted a Shavian keymap for X windows
(xkb), and someone else has posted keymaps for Windows before.
Everybody should be using Unicode!

I'm willing to offer my assistance to anybody who needs it to get
started. But I am no longer willing to copy and paste scrambled ASCII
and change fonts to read it.

I can read this e-mail as Shavian and Latin script fine and I have not
done anything with my system so what happened there?

Can I suggest some howtos for the files section?

How to enable Shavian/Unicode on M$ Windows XP, Vista etc.

How to write in Shavian in M$ Outlook etc.

How to write in Shavian on ....

Of course I haven't checked the files so they could be there already -
but it would be helpful for ordinary users to learn the techniques to
enable these things.

Just a thought,

John Warner's Shavian text reads perfectly in the Web-based mail
client Gmail, running on a Mac under the latest Mac operating system
(Leopard). I can even enlarge the type big enough that my tired old
eyes can read it!

Now if I just knew how to type it!

Google along with this message sent me an ad for behnevis.com that
displays in Farsi - I guess it thinks Shavian is an Arabic alphabet!
Take a look at this Web site for a quite ingenious Roman-to-Arabic
alphabet Farsi converter.

Most of the Shavian posts on our list come through to me in Roman.
I've never been clear on what fonts I need to install. Let's hear it
for Unicode!

I am using kmail on KDE, and what I see is a series of boxes with punctuation. What am I missing?

Last time I checked KDE was not totally Unicode compliant. It could
handle only the first 64k character plane (plane 0) of Unicode, while
Shavian (and an increasing number of other characters and scripts) is
located beyond the first 64k in plane 1.

As a test, if KDE is working properly, you should see one (1) box on the
following line:
๐‘
If you see anything other than a single box or the letter Peep, then you
need to use something other than a KDE app. I tested Evolution and it
works great for both composing and reading.
